Across the Academy - Sept. 13


WHAT’S AHEAD:
Academy Debuts Set for San Juan, Orlando City: The second week of the season includes two more teams making their Development Academy debuts. On Saturday, the San Juan Soccer Club’s U-15/16 and U-17/18 teams travel to Arizona to face Real Salt Lake AZ. On Sunday, Orlando City hosts the North Carolina Fusion in Jacksonville, Fla. The opening week of the 2012-13 season included the debuts of the Portland Timbers and Montreal Impact. The Sept. 15-16 weekend features 64 games on the docket, with many Central Conference and East Conference teams playing their first game of the season, as well as a local derby between the Richmond Strikers and Richmond Kickers. U.S. U-18 MNT Netherlands Trip Wrapping Up: The U.S. U-18 Men’s National Team is in the midst of a training camp in Mill, Netherlands. The U.S. defeated Netherlands 4-2 on Tuesday at ’29 Stadium in Groesbeek, Netherlands, as four different players scored for the USA, including Academy players Benji Lopez of Real Salt Lake AZ and Ben Spencer of Chivas USA.

LAST WEEK’S HIGHLIGHTS:
West Conference:

  • Paul Salcedo Borrego of Strikers FC’s U-17/18 team scored three goals as Strikers FC defeated Vancouver Whitecaps FC 3-0 on Sunday to improve to 2-0-0. It marks a promising start to the season for Strikers FC, whose U-17/18 team had 10 wins in 30 games in 2011-12.
  • Led by a two-goal effort from Christian Diaz, the Pateadores U-15/16 squad defeated Crossfire Premier 4-0 while also recording the team’s second shutout of the season. Pateadores (1-0-1) also got goals from Kevin Okuda and Tristan Thompson.


Central Conference:

  • Texans SC Houston’s U-15/16 and U-17/18 teams earned a weekend sweep against the Texas Rush, with Bryce Marion posting a hat trick during the U-15/16 squad’s 4-1 win and Emmanuel Usen notching a hat trick during the U-17/18 team’s 5-2 victory. Joshua Ayala and Mac Reyes also scored for Texans SC Houston’s U-17/18 team as the five goals tied for the most in a match among the Academy’s opening-week games.


East Conference:

  • D.C. United swept its Saturday set against NJSA 04. Denis Najar had two goals for the D.C. United U-17/18 team en route to a 5-2 victory. Bruno Zambrana also posted a two-goal effort as the D.C. United’s U-15/16 team defeated NJSA 04 by a 3-1 margin.
  • Second-half substitution Ahmad Aly scored the lone goal in the 77th minute of the BW Gottschee Academy U-17/18 team’s 1-0 victory against FC Westchester.


PEAK PERFORMERS
Week 1 Player of the Week: Bryce Marion, Forward, Texans SC Houston
Bryce Marion scored three goals to lead the Texans SC Houston U-15/16 team to a 4-1 victory against the Texas Rush on Sunday in its season opener. Marion started and played 65 minutes as Texans SC Houston (1-0-0) took the early lead in the Frontier Division alongside the Dallas Texans. Marion’s tallies came in the 17th, 44th and 45th minutes.

Referee of the Week: Mohammad Samadpour
Mohammad Samadpour earns Referee of the Week honors for his performance during this past weekend’s U-17/18 match between Potomac and FC DELCO. Samadpour was a Referee of the Week in late May during the 2011-12 Academy season. Aside from Development Academy matches, the Maryland-based referee has previously worked United Soccer League games.

OTHER ACADEMY NEWS AND NOTES:
Timbers, Impact Make Academy Debuts: Two new Development Academy teams made their debuts last weekend – the Portland Timbers and Montreal Impact. Among some of the firsts: Portland’s Niko De Vera scored the U-15/16 team’s first goal in the 18th minute against Chivas USA, while Montreal U-17/18 goalkeeper Samuel Dufort got the start as the Impact posted its first clean sheet against Albertson SC. U.S. U-17 MNT Splits with Academy Teams: The U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team faced a pair of U-17/18 Academy teams earlier this month, with both the U.S. U-17s and Academy earning a win. The U.S. rallied for a 3-2 victory against St. Louis Scott Gallagher Missouri on Sept. 8 as Solar Chelsea SC product Alan Winn scored the winner for the U.S. SLSG Missouri’s Austin Panchot and Jason Hackett gave their side an early 2-0 lead. In the other matchup, Crew Soccer Academy’s Rylee Woods and Alex Bumpus found the back of the net to lead CSA to a 2-1 win against the U.S. U-17 MNT on Monday, Sept. 10. Ahinga Selemani (CSA Wolves) had a goal in each match for the U.S. U-17 team, which will be sending a squad to the eight-team AGS Cup later this month in Alicante, Spain.
