U-17 '90 MNT Fall to Argentina 1-0

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (March 30, 2006) - The U.S. Under-17 '90 Men's National Team was reduced to 10 men for more than half their match against Argentina and couldn't hold off the hosts as they fell 1-0 in their second match of Group A at the Copa Esperanzas Corea 2007 Tournament in Buenos Aires.

With the 1-1 draw against the Comision Actividades Infantiles (a regional team in Argentina) in their opening match of the tournament, the U.S. finished Group A in third place with just one point. Argentina won the group with four points, while CAI was second with two points.

The U.S. will now face another regional team from Argentina, All Boys, in the 5th/6th place match on Friday, March 31.

Early in the match, the U.S. had a great opportunity when a ball was served across the front of the goal mouth and Danny Barerra was able to get a slight touch to it, but a defender was able to clear it out as it headed toward the goal line.

The U.S. suffered a major blow when Tevin Jackson was sent off and they went down to 10 men in the 35th minute. On the play, Jackson challenged for a 50-50 ball with an Argentina forward, but took the blunt of the collision as his forearm hit Jackson in the head. Jackson was down on the ground for several minutes before being taken off the field with a mild concussion. Despite getting injured, the referee viewed Jackson's challenge as reckless and showed him the red card.

"We actually played quite well before Tevin was sent off," said U.S. Under-17 Men's National Team head coach John Hackworth. "When that happened it changed the game and changed how we were able to attack. We played well defensively and counter-attacked, but a slight mistake allowed them to get the game-winner."

Argentina capitalized in the 56th minute when U.S. goalkeeper Josh Lambo miss-hit a punt, hitting a line drive that was headed back up the field by Guido Pizzaro to a streaking Federico Laurito. Behind the U.S. defense that was pushing forward for the punt, Laurito dribbled in on goal one-v-one with Lambo and slipped his shot into the back of the net.

The U.S. pressed for the equalizer in the final 20 minutes, but couldn't find the equalizer.

In Group B play, Australia finished in first place with victories over Armenio (3-0) and All Boys (2-1). Armenio, a local club team, finished in second place after defeating All Boys, 2-0.
