Development Academy Weekend Wrap-Up - Nov. 13, 2007

CHICAGO (Nov. 13, 2007) -- The Concorde Fire (Marietta, Ga.) had two offensive explosions over the weekend, including a 6-1 route of the AFC Lightning (Fayetteville, Ga.) on Saturday and a 6-3 win over the Atlanta Fire (Alpharetta, Ga.) on Sunday. Riley Sumpter accounted for two first half goals against AFC, while Nick Burton added one. Christopher Feigenbaum’s 24th minute goal for the Lightning made it 3-1 at halftime, but that was as close as AFC would come. In the 69th minute, Alex Evert scored, and just a minute later Cameron Cooksey added to Concorde’s lead. Walker Jemigan rounded out the scoring in the 80th minute for the 6-1 final.

Against the Atlanta Fire, Concorde continued their scoring spree. Down a goal early after Alassane Kane’s ninth goal of the season for Atlanta just two minutes in, Taylor White wasted no time, leveling the score just three minutes later. In the 39th minute, Nick Burton gave Concorde their first lead of the game, and they would never relinquish it. Kevan George and Sumpter scored within minutes of each other to make it 4-1, and Sumpter added his second of the game (and fourth of the weekend) in the 81st minute. Fode Diallo and Rury Alvarez scored consolation goals for Atlanta in the 75th and 90th minutes, respectively, but Evert scored his second goal of the weekend in second-half stoppage time for the 6-3 final.

The Richmond Strikers’ Brian Ownby continued his goal-scoring pace with his eighth and ninth goals of the season against the Richmond Kickers in Saturday afternoon rivalry action. In the battle between the two current leaders of the Atlantic Conference, Ownby opened the scoring in the fifth minute and added another in the second half. Jonathan Koulesis pulled the Kickers within one in the 69th minute, but a Sam Schaffer goal sealed the 3-1 win for the Strikers.

A back and forth battle between Bridge FA (Charleston, S.C.) and the Virginia Rush (Virginia Beach, Va.) led to the only draw in the U-17/18 age group on the weekend. Christopher Dixon put Bridge up in the 18th minute, but just five minutes later Hector Arellano answered back for the Rush. Preston Myers gave Bridge their second lead of the day with his 30th minute strike. Approaching the final whistle, the Rush built up their attack and finally broke even in the 83rd minute when second-half substitute Alexander Gylfason found the back of the net.

A Mark Tonkel hat trick led the DeAnza Force (Cupertino, Calif.) to a 3-1 victory over Crossfire Premier (Redmond, Wash.) in a battle between the two top active teams in the West Conference. After going down a goal on a 19th minute strike from Crossfire’s Esteban Reyes, Tonkel scored in the 31st, 48th and 65th minutes to put his team on top and hand Crossfire their first loss of the season.

The Atlanta Fire also played host to IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) on Sunday, coming away with a 2-0 victory. Cody McKelvey broke the game’s scoreless tie in the 34th minute, and Taylor Jordan added an insurance goal in the 74th minute. Robert Phelps recorded his second shutout of the season in goal for the Fire.

Chivas USA (Carson, Calif.) fell to the San Diego Surf, 2-0. Gustavo Alvarez scored for the Surf, and a Chivas own-goal made the final score 2-0.

The Richmond Strikers hosted cross-town rivals Richmond Kickers on Saturday afternoon and took an early lead, with Nicholas Wright striking in the eighth minute. The Kickers battled back and pulled even just a minute into the second half on a Jonathon Reardon goal. But the Strikers pulled off the 2-1 win courtesy of a David Walden game-winner in the 77th minute.

Four different goal scorers led the Concorde Fire to a win over the AFC Lightning in Southeast Conference action. Robert Gooden got the Fire on the board in just the third minute, and Tyler Daly made it 2-0 in the 17th minute. Saxon Venair and Greg MacKenzie added goals in the 25th and 32nd minutes, respectively, to give Concorde a 4-0 lead before half. AFC battled back to get a goal in the 74th minute from Wesley Mason, but it was not enough, and Concorde went on to win, 4-1.

Two Justin Watson goals, his league-leading eighth and ninth goals of the season, led Bridge FA to a win at home against the Virginia Rush, tallying in the ninth and 23rd minutes. William Ayers cut the lead in half in the 68th minute, but it was not enough for the Rush, as they fell, 2-1.

In Saturday’s West Conference action, Crossfire Premier battled the DeAnza Force, and earned a 2-0 win at home. Andrew Cunningham and Renato Bandeiro scored in the 33rd and 50th minutes, respectively, while Dillion Saffle recorded the shutout in goal. With the win, Crossfire maintained their perfect record with their fifth win of the season.

After a scoreless first half, IMG Academy got on the board first against the Atlanta Fire when Kevin Peterson scored in the 63rd minute. Patrick Otte scored in the 74th and 80th minutes for IMG to give the Bradenton, Fla., club a 3-0 win.

In Sunday afternoon matches, Chivas USA turned a 1-0 halftime lead into a 3-0 victory over the San Diego Surf. Oliquer Olivar opened the scoring for Chivas in the first half. Jorge Ramirez and Carlo Chueca added insurance goals in the 54th and 78th minutes, respectively, to give their team a win on the road.

The DeAnza Force traveled to Washington Premier, and fell victim to two quick goals. In just the third minute, Gabriele Zaccahnini gave Washington the edge, and KC Phillips scored in the 16th minute. It would be all Washington would need to hold on for the 2-0 win.

In the U-15/16 age group’s only tie of the weekend, the Concorde Fire and Atlanta Fire were involved in a defensive battle, and came away with a 0-0 draw.
