U.S. Men to Face Sweden in First European Trip of 2007 on August 22 in Goteborg
CHICAGO (April 23, 2007) – The United States Men’s National Team will play its first match on European soil in 2007 when they travel to face 11-time World Cup finalists Sweden on Wednesday, Aug. 22 at Ullevi Stadium in Goteborg, Sweden. Kickoff for the match is set for 2:30 p.m. ET (8:30 p.m. local time) and will be broadcast live on Fox Soccer Channel (with Galavision airing the match live at 2:30 p.m. ET and delayed at 2:30 p.m. PT). Fans can also follow the match live via ussoccer.com’s MatchTracker.
"We are very pleased to have the opportunity to play an opponent with the quality of Sweden," said U.S. head coach Bob Bradley. "It is one of our continuing goals to play as many challenging matches as possible, and the chance to face a team of Sweden's caliber and to do it in Europe is extremely beneficial for the program. With the match falling on an international fixture date, we look forward to bringing an extremely competitive side to Goteborg."
Sweden, currently ranked No. 24 in the world, has competed in 11 World Cup finals, highlighted by a second-place finish in the 1958 tournament and a third-place finish in USA ’94. In 2006, they advanced out of Group B along with England before falling in the Round of 16 to hosts Germany.
The Swedes are sitting in second place of Group F in the qualifying tournament for the 2008 European Championship, one point behind leaders Northern Ireland and three ahead of Spain. They are led by team captain and Arsenal midfielder Fredrik Ljungberg and striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has amassed 18 goals in 43 international appearances and helped hoist the Serie A trophy with Italian league champion Inter Milan this past weekend after scoring 15 goals in 26 league appearances.
The USA and Sweden have met only four times previously, with the series split evenly at 2-2-0. The teams last met over nine years ago, with the U.S. grabbing a 1-0 victory on Jan. 24, 1998, in Orlando, Fla., on the strength of a Roy Wegerle finish. Besides a 3-2 win by the U.S. in Stockholm on Aug. 20, 1916, the only other meeting on Swedish soil saw the hosts capture a 1-0 win on Aug. 16, 1995 in Norrkoping.
The U.S. is gearing up for a busy summer, beginning with a tune-up match against China on June 2 at Spartan Stadium in San Jose (tickets). Five days later, the three-time champions will try to defend their title against 11 other teams at the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup, scheduled from June 6-24 in several cities across the United States. Just a few days later, the U.S. will participate in the 2007 Copa America, the regional championship of South America. The 12-team tournament will run from June 26 to July 15 in nine cities across Venezuela. For the United States, the appearance will mark their third entrance into CONMEBOL’s signature event, and the first since a third place finish in 1995.
