w/ U-21 WNT midfielder Joanna Lohman

Joanna Lohman, a.k.a. "JoLo", an NSCAA First-Team All-American for the Penn State Nittany Lions and a key player on this year's U.S. Under-21 Women's National Team, spent her Spring Break away from the cold down South in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. This is her story:

"Last year, I couldn't go on a typical college Spring Break because the Under-21s had an event.  I was bummed, but the only thing better than sleeping until noon and then lying on the beach in tropical weather, is doing double days of training with some fitness thrown in.  This year, some friends were going to Spain, but I wanted to stay closer to home, so a group of us decided to head to the Spring Break mecca of Ft. Lauderdale.

"It was just me and four friends, one of whom was on the soccer team, so it was going to be pretty mellow.  Of course, one of the girls had a boyfriend who went to another college, and he decided to bring 16 of his closest friends.  I like those odds.

"Unfortunately, the weather was really bad -- total bummer.  It was rainy and windy and we really couldn't do much beach time, so instead we hit the local eateries for some afternoon and evening socializing.

"We stayed at kind of a nice hotel, with five girls packed into one room 'Spring Break style.' Amazingly,  we didn't get into too many arguments over the five days.  My one friend did get the guts to enter a wet t-shirt contest, but I guess she didn't have the goods, ‘cause she lost.

"One night at a club, this guy from the Coast Guard kept trying to get me to dance with him.  Truth be told, the guy was a dork.  I mean, who wears sunglasses at nine o'clock at night in a nightclub?  Can you say 'LOSER'?  After he asked me to dance for the fourth time, I said, ‘Hey buddy, go guard someone's else's coast, these waters are off limits.'

"One of our goals was to try to see some famous people.  One night we were at a club, and over in the corner with his entourage was Brad Pitt.  Since the rest of my group was a bunch of wimps, I got up the courage to walk over and ask him for a kiss.  I figured my Spring Break would be complete with a smooch from Brad, and if Jennifer got in my face, well, we would have to throw down.  So, to my surprise, he grabbed me in a passionate embrace and laid a wet one on me... then I woke up!

"So, in the end, despite five days of searching, we really didn't see any famous people.  But we had a blast dancing and hanging out together, and the goal of Spring Break -- to blow off steam and forget about school for a while -- was accomplished.

"When we got back to school, it was freezing and snowing.  I think Spring Break was invented for Penn State students.  We're thinking about the Bahamas for next year."

See you there,
JoLo
