A-League Sweeps Eight Matches Against D3 Pro League Squads in Open Cup Qualifying

CHICAGO (Monday, May 21, 2001) - U.S. Open Cup Qualifying continued with the battle of inter-league groups from the USL's A-League and D3 Pro League. The A-League teams won all eight head-to-head match-ups against the D3 Pro squads over the weekend. The A-League dominance began last Friday, with Pittsburgh Riverhounds scoring a 3-1 victory over the D3 Pro Northern Virginia Royals, while the Seattle Sounders blanked the Northern Nevada Aces 3-0. In other head-to-head matches, the Charleston Battery shutout the Wilmington Hammerheads 2-0, while the Charlotte Eagles topped the Carolina Dynamo 2-1. On Saturday, Charleston Battery and Charlotte Eagles once again scored victories as the Battery blanked the Wilmington Hammerheads 2-0 and the Eagles defeated the Carolina Dynamo 3-1. Qualifying continues this week with 14 more matches across the nation.
