Murphy Brace Leads CASL Chelsea FC to Win Against Real Colorado

CARSON, Calif. (July 14, 2009) – In a back and forth game that could have gone either way, CASL Chelsea FC Academy topped Real Colorado 2-0, dashing Real Colorado’s hopes of advancing to the U-17/18 Development Academy championship. Martin Murphy scored two goals within nine minutes in the second half to lead his team to victory.

Real Colorado nearly opened the scoring in the 20th minute, but CASL goalkeeper Joseph Goodwin made one of his many excellent saves on the day, leaping to tip it over the bar. From that point, Real Colorado started to push the pace of the game, knowing they needed a win to advance to the final. They nearly broke through on a free kick just outside the penalty area, and Goodwin once again was able to tip a well-taken shot from Taylor Kempin over the bar.

CASL was looking to take advantage of the opponent’s attacking mind-set and finally got on the board in the 69th minute. Murphy took a free kick from approximately 25 yards straight out from the goal, sending it perfectly into the left upper corner. Nine minutes later, a ball was driven low into the box, and Murphy pounced on it, hitting it hard into the net from close range.
