U.S. Under-17 Women Defeat Australia at Future Stars Tournament in New Zealand

AUCKLAND, New Zealand (January 29, 2008) - Sisters Kristen and Samantha Mewis combined for four goals and two assists while forward Vicki DiMartino (whose sister Tina recently debuted for the full WNT) added a goal and two assists as the U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team began a year it hopes will end at the 2007 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup with a 6-0 win over Australia at the Future Stars Tournament in New Zealand. It was the first international match of 2008 for the U.S. U-17s. The first-ever FIFA event for this age group will be played in New Zealand from Oct. 30-Nov. 16 and the Americans will attempt to qualify this summer.

After failing to qualify out of Asia for the 2008 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, Australia brought some younger players to this tournament as they build towards the next U-17 World Cup in 2010 and the Americans took advantage, scoring three times in each half. The Aussies played with a three-back alignment and after the 30th minute, the Americans pierced it efficiently and often.

The first goal came in the 32nd minute after DiMartino’s defensive pressure forced a poor back pass by the Aussies. Tani Costa swooped in to win the ball and passed to a wide-open Kristen Mewis, who finished easily from four yards out. DiMartino doubled the lead in the 40th minute, scoring from just outside the penalty area into the lower left corner. Just one minute later, Samantha Mewis got her first goal of the match, pounding in a shot in from six yards out after DiMartino had slid the ball across the goal mouth.

“I thought that Australian players did well in the beginning of the match,” said Kristen Mewis, who scored her first international goals at the U-17 level. “We didn’t play our best to start out and it was a pretty even game, but they got a bit tired and we took over. I give them credit because they never gave up, and their goalkeeper had a really good game.”

The first goal of the second half came in the 59th minute as Kristin Mewis added her second, slotting the ball home at the far post from eight yards out. In the 67th minute, Samantha Mewis scored almost a duplicate of her first goal, half-volleying a back-post cross from DiMartino.

Courtney Verloo decided not to let the Mewis’ and DiMartino have all the goal scoring fun, heading home the final goal in the 79th minute off a corner kick from Kristin Mewis.

“I felt it was a very strong first game of the tournament, which is important because this is where the World Cup will be held,” said U.S. head coach Kazbek Tambi. “We asked the players to treat the games as if they were the World Cup. The kids moved the ball around really well, finished great goals and played with great spirit. We hope we’ll be able to improve as the week moves on.”

The USA takes on the host New Zealand U-17 Women’s National Team next on Jan. 31.
