U.S. U-20 WNT Heads To Portland For More Matches Against College Teams

After finishing a training camp at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., on March 26, the break will be short for the U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team as preparations for the 2006 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Championship continue with a training camp in Portland, Ore., from April 1-8.

The young U.S. team will play five matches in eight days against four college teams from the Northwest, plus Ohio State.  The USA will play Washington State (3 p.m. on April 1, on the Nike Campus), Washington (12 p.m. on April 2, at the University of Portland), Portland (5 p.m. on April 4, at UP), Oregon State (5 p.m. on April 6, at UP) and Ohio State (4 p.m. on April 8, at Nike).

U.S. head coach Tim Schulz will bring 19 players to this training camp, a roster that includes defender Stephanie Lopez, who will see her first action of the year with the U-20s. Lopez, who has been on the U.S. Women’s National Team rosters for both major tournaments this year, played every minute of all six matches at the 2002 FIFA U-19 Women’s World Championship in Thailand.

Schulz will however be without several of the top players in the pool due to school commitments. Missing this camp will be forward Amy Rodriguez, midfielder Brittany Bock, defenders Stephanie Logterman and Carrie Dew and goalkeeper Val Henderson.

Six players who were members of the team that won the CONCACAF U-20 Qualifying Tournament at the end of January return to the roster in Portland after missing the Los Angeles camp due to school commitments. Those players are midfielders Amanda Poach, Jordan Angeli, Lindsey Beam, forward Kelley O’Hara and goalkeeper Kelsey Davis.
