10-Man Brazil Guts Out Physical 1-1 Draw with Portugal
LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. (Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013) – Portugal and Brazil battled to a physical 1-1 draw in the first game of Match Day 2 of the Nike international Friendlies at Premier Sports Campus.
Brazil turned its early dominance into a 1-0 lead courtesy of a Marcelo de Souza deflection in the 10th minute. Portugal slowly recovered to tie the match on its first sustained attack when Ricardo Mangas slotted a low shot past Brazil goalkeeper Bruno Oliveira nine minutes later.
The teams combined for 33 fouls between them as well as seven yellow cards and a red that was issued to Brazil’s Caique da Silva in the 26th minute after he received his second caution in four minutes for a pair of reckless challenges.
Brazil dominated the opening exchanges with a slick, methodic attack that created a couple chances before a long range effort from _ was deflected by de Souza past sprawling Portugal goalkeeper Fabio Duarte, who got a hand to the ball but could not keep it from rolling over the goal line.
Brazil slowly dropped off after the goal, allowing Portugal time and space to build an attack that got them a result after its first sustained spell of pressure. A close shot was blocked over the end line by Brazil and on the ensuing Portugal corner Brazil was only able to partially clear the ball. Portugal collected the loose ball and Bruno Lourenco fed Mangas as he sped down Brazil’s right flank. As he broke into the box, Mangas tucked a neat shot in the right hand side netting to knot the match at 1-1.
Portugal found its feet from that point on, controlling much of the rest of the half and limiting Brazil to the odd counter attack.
With both teams trying to establish control of the game, hard challenges began flying in from both teams. In a disastrous span of four minutes for Brazil’s da Silva, the young midfielder collected two cautions for reckless challenges and was sent off in the 26th minute.
Portugal could count itself desperately unlucky as Rui Sousa rang a shot off the post just after the midway point of the half and saw a shot cleared off the line as the half time whistle sounded.
In the final 45 minutes, Portugal created plenty of chances to win the match, but it was Brazil that came closest to adding to its tally with a PK opportunity in the final minutes of regulation.
After a well worked combination set Pablo Vinicius free in the Portugal box. As he evaded the goalkeeper, he was brought down before unloading a shot. Referee Cedric Adams pointed to the spot, but de Souza lashed his effort wide of right post.
Gustavo Martini also had a chance to steal the points for Brazil deep into the five minutes of second half stoppage but sent an unchallenged header over Duarte’s crossbar to spurn the final meaningful chance of the match.
Brazil will finish play at the 2013 Nike International Friendlies on Friday against the USA at 5 p.m., while Portugal concludes the tournament with a 2 p.m. match against England. Fans can watch both matches live on ussoccer.com or follow the action on Twitter @ussoccer_ynt.
