U.S. Under-17s Dominate Honduras in Pair of Convincing Victories

CHICAGO (Wednesday, January 31, 2001) - The United States Men's Under-17 National Team started 2001 in style this week, rolling to two wins in their first internationals of the year, topping CONCACAF rival Honduras 3-0 on Jan.31, and 4-1 on Jan. 29. U.S. striker Ed Johnson continued to pace the American attack, netting five goals in the two matches. Johnson now has 13 goals in 14 career international matches.

The U.S. was especially impressive in Wednesday's shutout win, as the U.S. defense did not allow a shot on goal the entire match and jumped out to a 3-0 lead by halftime. U.S. goalkeeper Ford Williams recorded the shutout in his first start of the year. Johnson, who recently signed with Nike Project-40 and is eligible for the MLS SuperDraft on Feb.5, scored in the 17th and 31st minutes, before being subbed out in the 61st minute. U.S. midfielder Santino Quaranta, another recent Nike Pro-40 signee, recorded the assist on both of Johnson's goals.

Ed Johnson lead the way again in Monday's 4-1 win against Honduras, scoring a hat trick before retiring to the bench in the 67th minute. Michael Magee started the scoring in the seventh minute, with an assist from Justin Mapp. After a Johnson goal at the end of the first half, Honduras trimmed the lead to 2-1 in the 48th minute with a penalty kick. Ed Johnson delivered the knockout punch with back-to-back goals in the 54th minute and 56th minute.

The U.S. travels to the Orange Bowl in Miami, Fla., this weekend to take on another CONCACAF foe, Guatemala, on Saturday, Feb. 3, at 1:30 p.m. That match will be followed by the U.S. Men's National Team versus Colombia at 4 p.m. ET (live on ESPN2 and Telemundo).
