Chico Defeats Stanislaus United to Open 2001 U.S. Open Cup Professional Qualifying


CHICAGO (Monday, April 9, 2001) - The 2001 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup qualifying officially began last Saturday at the professional level as the D3 Pro League's Chico Rooks defeated the Stanislaus United Cruisers, 2-1, in Chico, Calif. Forward Felipe Ternero notched both tallies for the Rooks, who jump into first place in Group 10, which also includes the A-League's San Diego Flash. The match is part of the United Soccer League's new inter-league qualifying competition, in which 18 teams from the A-League and 20 from the D3 Pro League will compete in 10 geographic groups to earn 16 spots in the 36-team U.S. Open Cup tournament, which is slated to begin in early June. The qualifying round continues this weekend, when the Flash host the Cruisers on Saturday (April 14). Group 8 begins competition on Sunday (April 15), as the D3 Pro League's Arizona Sahuaros travels to face the El Paso Patriots of the A-League.
