Galaxy Takes FC Champions Cup, Earns Spot in FIFA Club World Championship

CHICAGO (Sunday, January 21, 2001) - Playing just across town from their normal home of the Rose Bowl, the Los Angeles Galaxy won the 2000 FC Champions Cup with a dramatic 3-2 win over Honduran club Olimpia yesterday at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum. Despite the outcome, both the Galaxy and Olimpia will both advance to the 2001 FIFA Club World Championship, to be played in Spain this summer. Wiry midfielder Ezra Hendrickson provided he team's first goal and the game winner in the 78th minute after Olimpia had drawn even at 2-2 in the 52nd minute. U.S. Men's National Team midfielder Cobi Jones had the other goal for L.A., which saw the debut of former World Cup star Alexi Lalas in a Galaxy uniform. D.C. United, who fell to the Galaxy 4-2 in penalty kicks in Friday's all-MLS semi-final, lost to Mexican club Pachuca 2-1 in the consolation match.
