CASL Chelsea FC Academy U-15/16 and Baltimore Bays U-15/16 Play Out to 0-0 Draw
CARSON, Calif. (July 12, 2010) – CASL Chelsea FC Academy U-15/16 and Baltimore Bays Chelsea U-15/16 played out to a 0-0 draw in their second group match of the 2010 Development Academy Finals Week at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. Neither team was able to muster a sustained attack to produce a goal in a back and forth affair.
In a match marked midfield giveaways and physical play, neither team was able to take advantage of their opportunities to stay alive in the race for the top spot in Group 2 of the U-15/16 age division. The 0-0 result opened the door for Cal Odyssey, who won on their first match in the group stage, to advance to the championship match with a win in the later game of the afternoon session.
CASL created the first chance of the match when they combined down the right hand side. Flanker Joaquin del Rosario found space to get to the end line and square a ball across the face of goal which Baltimore goalkeeper Spencer LaCivita came out to claim at the top of the six yard box before reaching the advancing CASL attackers.
Baltimore answered through a Michael Gamble solo effort when he collected a long bouncing ball and beat his defender into the left side of the area. However, he was not able to get a shot off as the combined pressure of his recovering attacker and onrushing goalkeeper smothered the ball and shepherded his effort to safety.
As the game progressed passed the 20 minute mark, neither team was able to establish dominance, although there were flashes of inspiration on both sides of the ball. CASL attacks broke down in the final third while Baltimore’s forwards could not latch onto their feeds from the back.
Baltimore had another chance just before the halftime break as one of their eight corners of the half was not fully cleared. Defender Elliott Andelmen collected the bouncing clearance hit a shot back into the mix where LaCivita did well to catch and hold the effort, not giving up a rebound.
The second half started with much of the same as the first half. With the teams doing much of the battling in the midfield, not many clear chances were created throughout the beginning spell of the second period. The pace of the passing, however, did pick up as both teams pushed the game in search of a breakthrough. Baltimore found two chances to break on counter attacks in the 53rd and 56th minutes, but LaCivita again, did well to snuff out the efforts.
As the game moved along, CASL began to find a footing but it was apparent the pace of the match had taken it physical toll on the teams as fatigue began to deteriorate the sharpness in passing. The final 10 minutes became very stretched and play was end to end as the teams exchanged attacks. In the waning moments of stoppage time, CASL was almost gifted a goal as Monbo Bakar found himself leading a 3-v-1 attack but could not convert the opportunity into goal.
Baltimore will take the field next on Wednesday, June 14, at 4 p.m. on Field 3 against Group 2 winners Cal Odyssey, while CASL take on the Internationals on Field 2 in a simultaneous match to wrap up Group 2 play at The Home Depot Center.
