FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Monday, February 24, 2003) - The U.S. Under-20 Men’s National fell 6-3 to Colombia today at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Knox Cameron tallied twice in the second half for the U.S., who were undone by a first half hat trick from Colombian striker Edixon Perea. The two teams meet again on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. ET at Nova Southeastern.
Both offenses exploded this afternoon, and in a precursor of things to come, Colombia got on the board in the fifth minute when Perea beat the U.S. offside trap and waltzed into the penalty area uncontested before slotting the ball past a stranded Steve Cronin. Perea tallied two more times late in the second half to give Colombia a 3-0 lead at intermission.
Knox Cameron, who was a handful for the Colombians all afternoon, scored twice for the U.S., and also drew a penalty kick when he was taken down in the penalty area in the 62nd minute. But Colombian goalkeeper Hector Fabio Landazuri stretched to his left to produce a fantastic save on Mike Magee’s penalty kick. Just over a minute later Cristian Marrugo converted on a Colombia counterattack, putting the South Americans ahead 4-0.
The U.S., who had the better of the play for long periods of time in the second half, got a well-deserved goal in the 69th minute, when halftime subsititue Cameron finished a Justin Mapp corner kick. Mapp served an outswinging ball from the left side, and Cameron rose unopposed in the middle of the penalty area and nodded the ball inside the far post.
The U.S. continued to press, but were unable to add to their scoring account. Minutes later, after Justin Mapp was dragged down just outside the penalty area, Mike Magee’s free kick was pushed just wide of the right post. Justin Mapp’s ensuing inswinging corner kick made it to the backpost, where Magee’s full volley was saved byu Fabio Landazuri. The Colombina goalkeeper bobbled Magee’s shot and Cochrane’s shot on the rebound was knocked out for another corner.
In the 84th minute the U.S. attack broke through once again, as Ricardo Clark headed in a Devin Barclay free kick. Less than 60 seconds later second half substitute Justin Moose walked around a defender and freed Cameron in the left side of the area with a well-paced through ball. Cameron finished exquisitely from a tight angle with his first touch, giving him his second goal and drawing the U.S. to within one goal.
The U.S. continued to press for an equalizer, but Colombian striker Victor Montana scored a pair of goals in the game’s final five minutes to seal the scoreline.
Two of the team’s usual starters – Bobby Convey and CJ Klaas – were rested for the match after sustaining minor injuries in a scrimmage on Saturday.
After Wednesday’s match against Colombia the U.S. will travel to Portugal for the Madiera International Tournament. There, the U.S. faces Portugal on March 3 at 11 a.m. local time (6 a.m. ET), Norway on March 5 at 2 p.m. local time (9 a.m. ET) and a Madeira Regional Select Team on March 7 at 10 a.m. local time (5 a.m. ET).
