U.S. U-23 WNT Falls To Norway 2-1 at Four Nations Tournament in England

COVENTRY, UK (July 9, 2010) - The U.S. U-23 Women’s National Team fell to the Norway U-23 WNT, 2-1, in its second match of the Four Nations Tournament, giving up two late goals before pulling back one of its own. The USA defeated England, 3-0, on July 7 to open the tournament.

Norway opened the scoring 78 minutes into the game as Nora Holstad Berge dribbled along right sideline and crossed into the penalty box for Ida Elise Enget who brought the ball down just inside the six, but then lost control. Elise Thorsnes was first to the loose ball and shot low into the left side of the net from six yards out.

It turned from bad to worse for the USA just two minutes later as the Americans gave up an own goal to go down, 2-0. Thorsnes crossed from right side to the far post just inside six and U.S. defender Lauren Fowlkes tried to clear the ball, but inadvertently struck it into the lower left corner.

The USA got brief life in the 86th minute when Danielle Foxhoven raced in from the left side at goalkeeper Ingrid Thorbjornsen with a defender on her hip. Thorbjornsen came out to clear the ball and collided with Foxhoven, but the University of Portland forward kept her feet and her wits to follow up with a shot low into the right corner.

The USA will finish the tournament against the Sweden U-23s on July 12.
