Hamm Leads Freedom to Victory, Washington Remains at Top of WUSA Standings
CHICAGO (Sunday, April 29, 2001) - Forward Mia Hamm tallied the game- winner as the Washington Freedom came from behind to defeated the host Carolina Courage 2-1 on Saturday at UNC's Fetzer Field. Hamm, who also assisted on the tying goal for the Freedom, scored the winning goal on a free kick in the 90th minute. The win gives the Freedom sole possession of first place with an unblemished 2-0 ledger with six points, while the Courage drop to 0-2 (0 points) on the season. In other matches, the Philadelphia Charge (1-0-1, 4 points) battled the Atlanta Beat (0-0-2, 2 points) to a scoreless draw on Saturday, while on Sunday forward Kristine Lilly's penalty kick goal gave the visiting Boston Breakers (1-0-1, 4 points) a 1-1 tie with the Bay Area Cyber Rays (0-1-1, 1 point). The New York Power (0-0-2, 2 points) and San Diego Spirit (0-1-1, 1 point) also played to 0-0 draw in Long Island, N.Y.
