U-23 WNT Draws 1-1 with Sweden at Three Nations Tournament in Norway

STJORDALEN, Norway (June 15, 2012) – The U.S. Under-23 Women’s National Team opened its three-game event in Norway with a 1-1 draw against the Sweden Under-23 Women’s National Team. U.S. defender Toni Pressley scored the lone goal for the Americans to equalize just before halftime.

The USA fell behind in the 31st minute after a poor clearance in the back went straight to Emmelie Konradsson who collected, took a touch and shot past U.S. goalkeeper Adrianna Franch.

The Americans pulled a goal back in the 44th minute off a quickly taken short corner kick. Midfielder Christine Nairn played the ball to defender Camille Levin who crossed into the box for the 5-foot-10 Pressley to head home

“I’m disappointed to not have gotten the W, but I am pleased that we fought back for the tie and did much better in the second half,” said U.S. head coach Randy Waldrum, who saw his team out-shoot Sweden 11-5. “This team has never played together before so we struggled in the beginning but definitely picked it up towards the end and although I would have preferred the win, I am pleased with the tie and how we pressured them and stepped it up in the second half.”

The USA will face will finish its trip with matches against the Norway’s U-23s on June 17 and June 19 at Overlands Minde Stadium in Stjordalen.
