U.S. Paralympic Team Defeats Portugal
CHICAGO (July 31, 2013) – The U.S. Paralympic National Team picked up its first victory of the Intercontinental Cup in Barcelona, Spain, with a 3-2 win against Portugal on Wednesday.
Rene Renteria got the U.S. on the board 10 minutes into the game, but Portugal scored the next two with a penalty kick just before halftime and a goal in the 53rd minute.
But the U.S. stepped on the gas late in the game, scoring two goals in the last three minutes with a goal from Marthell Vazquez in the 58th and one from Tyler Bennett a minute later.
Ukraine picked up its second victory of the tournament with a 6-0 win against Australia to remain at the top of Group C.
The U.S. finishes up group play with against Australia on Aug. 1. A win for the National Team and a loss by either Portugal or Ukraine would put them in second place in the group and set up a game with the winner of Group D.
