U.S. Soccer Announces Host Venues and Dates for Second Round of 2001 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup

CHICAGO (Friday, June 15, 2001) -
U.S. Soccer's Open Cup Committee has determined the dates and the venues for 15 of 16 second round match-ups that were paired on Wednesday during the 2001 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Draw. The second round will kickoff with one match-up on Tuesday, June 26 as the Tampa Bay Mutiny of Major League Soccer travel north to face the Connecticut Wolves of the A-League at Veteran's Memorial Stadium in New Britain, Conn. Fourteen more games will be on Wednesday, June 27, while one second round game and several kickoff times will be determined at a later date.

For the first time in Open Cup second round history, Fox Sports World will broadcast the match-up between the Los Angeles Galaxy (MLS) and Nashville Metros (A-League) live from Titan Stadium in Fullerton, Calif. on June 27, at 7 p.m. PT.

Fox Sports World, which broadcast the semifinals and championship match last year, has added several more U.S. Open Cup matches to its television schedule in 2001, which now includes one second round game, two quarterfinal match-ups along with the semifinals and final.

Also in Open Cup second round action, the Milwaukee County Sports Complex will host a unique doubleheader as the host Milwaukee Rampage of the A-League will meet D3 Pro League's Utah Blitzz in the opener of the twin-bill at 3 p.m CT, while in the nightcap, defending champion Chicago Fire (MLS) begin their quest for another title when they take on the San Diego Flash (A-League) at 6 p.m. CT.

On June 27, last year's runner-up, the Miami Fusion (MLS), will be the visiting squad to Uruguay S.C. (of Davie, Fla.), who is the only team to represent the U.S. Amateur Soccer Association (USASA) in the second round of the 2001 Open Cup.

Of the 16 second round match-ups, there is only one intra-league pairing, with the A-League's Rochester Raging Rhinos facing the Hershey Wildcats at a venue to be determined.

In a rematch of the 1999 quarterfinals, the Carolina Dynamo (D3) will have a chance at revenge when they face the Columbus Crew (MLS) at Crew Stadium on June 27. The teams met in 1999 and the Crew walked away with a 3-0 victory.

Another rematch will have the New England Revolution (MLS) squaring off against the Mid Michigan Bucks of the Premier Development League (PDL) in Foxboro Stadium on June 27. The Bucks stunned the Revolution 1-0 in the second round last year.

Dating back to 1914, the Lamar U.S. Open Cup is the oldest soccer cup competition in the United States and is among the oldest in the world. Open to all affiliated amateur and professional teams in the U.S., the annual Open Cup is an 88-year-old single-elimination tournament based on similar competitions played across the world concurrent with domestic league action.

In 1999, the U.S. Open Cup was renamed the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup to honor the long-time soccer supporter and pioneer. Hunt, the owner of the Columbus Crew and Kansas City Wizards of MLS and the owner of the Dallas Tornados of the old NASL, was one of the sports first major ownership figures and is a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame.
