LA MANGA, Spain (February 24, 2010) – U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team forward Sydney Leroux scored in the 83rd minute and the young Americans were seconds away from defeating the Germany U-20 Women’s National Team before scoring an own goal one minute into second half stoppage time.
The match was the second of three games for the U.S. U-20s at the La Manga Cup in Spain. The USA defeated Norway’s U-23s 1-0 on Feb. 22 and will finish the competition against England’s U-23s on Feb. 26.
The U.S. team had several players fall ill on the day of the match, including goalkeeper Adriana Franch, but she gutted out the game only to allow the equalizer in the final seconds.
The U.S. goal came when midfielder Samantha Mewis played a low driven ball from the left wing across the field to Leroux who was posted up on the defender with her back to goal. Leroux collected the ball at her feet and turned inside, dribbling at pace at the back line on a diagonal before unloading 25-yard shot that beat the diving German ‘keeper into the left corner.
Germany’s goal came in the 91st minute when Maya Hayes committed a foul just over midfield. The German center back took a long free kick and the ball dropped toward the U.S. penalty spot as Toni Pressley tried to get her head on it. The ball glanced backwards off her head right and over the outstretched arm of Franch. The ball hit the crossbar, bounced on the goal line and back up into the upper netting of the goal.
It was Leroux’s 19th international goal at the U-20 level in just 23 matches.
“We played very well,” said U.S. head coach Jill Ellis. “Giving up the goal in extra time was an unfortunate end to an otherwise solid performance. We created a lot of scoring chances and controlled the game for long periods. Collectively I think this team took a step forward tonight. This was a great challenge and these types of matches will benefit us down the road.”
The USA out-shot Germany 13-4 and had a goal disallowed in the 24th minute on a questionable offside call. Hayes had played a ball across the six-yard box for Leroux to slam home, but the referee waved it off.
The U.S. roster for La Manga features 16 players who are fresh off winning the 2010 CONCACAF U-20 Women’s Championships in Guatemala in January that qualified the team for the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Germany.
