WNT Head Coach Greg Ryan Names 20-Player Roster for 2007 Algarve Cup

CHICAGO (February 21, 2007) – U.S. Women’s National Team head coach Greg Ryan has named 20 players to the roster for the 2007 Algarve Cup, being held from March 7-14 in southern Portugal.

The Americans, who have been drawn into Group B at the prestigious tournament, will open play on March 7 against China, face Finland on March 9 and finish the first-round against Sweden on March 12. All the first round games are played at small venues spread out over the Algarve region on the southern coast of the country with all of the placement matches taking place on March 14. Fans can follow the USA’s grueling schedule of four games in eight days online via ussoccer.com's MatchTracker and watch exclusive highlights from all_access video.

Group A features defending Algarve Cup champions Germany, as well as Norway, France and Denmark. Six of the eight teams in Groups A and B will be participating in the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup in China come September, with only France and Finland missing out. Group C features Portugal, Ireland, Italy and Iceland.

The Algarve Cup will mark the first matches for U.S. midfielder Shannon Boxx since she played against Japan on May 9, 2006. Boxx has almost fully recovered from ACL surgery and is ready for the run to the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

“I’m just excited to be playing competitively again,” said Boxx. “The Algarve Cup is the best preparation we can have in a World Cup year. We are going to face some of the top teams that will be in the World Cup and this is always a big tournament for us. Playing such great competition is a stepping stone for our ultimate goal at the Women’s World Cup, but this is also a good test to see where we are in our preparations.”

This will be the 12th trip to the Algarve Cup for the U.S. women who, from 2003-2005, won an unprecedented three straight championships at what has become the world’s most competitive women’s international event outside of the Women's World Cup, the Olympics and the European Championship. At last year’s Algarve Cup, the USA advanced to the championship game, but fell in penalty kicks to Germany to break its hold on the tournament.

In addition to Boxx, four other veterans return to the U.S. squad after not participating in the Four Nations Tournament in China in forward Kristine Lilly, who will captain the team, forward Abby Wambach, the USA’s leading scorer in 2006, midfielder Aly Wagner and defender Christie Rampone. The remaining 16 players on the roster were all in China at the Four Nations in January.

Ryan will bring an experienced squad to Portugal as there are no players on the roster who are Algarve Cup rookies. Every player has been to the tournament at least once, with Lilly leading the way. She will be playing in her 11th Algarve Cup.

The two youngest players named to the roster are defenders India Trotter, who will turn 22 in Portugal, and 20-year old Stephanie Lopez. Veteran defender Kate Markgraf was not named as she continues to rest and recuperate some minor injuries.

Two players will play under new names in the Algarve Cup as Marci Jobson (formerly Miller) and Tina Ellertson (formerly Frimpong) will, for the first time, adopt their married names for National Team duty.
