U.S. U-23 WNT Begins Year with Camp at The HDC

CHICAGO (Jan. 3, 2011) -- U.S. Under-23 Women’s National Team head coach Bill Irwin has called 24 players to a training camp running from Jan. 9-16 at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. The camp will overlap several days with the full WNT training camp being held from Jan. 8-14. All the players eligible for the U-23s in 2011 were born on or after Jan. 1, 1988. Irwin’s roster features just four professional players, but there are several who are expected to be chosen in the 2011 WPS Draft later this month, including Christen Press, the nation’s leading scorer during the 2010 college season for Stanford. The four players who played in the WPS last season are defender Nikki Marshall, midfielder Becky Edwards and Casey Nogueira and forward Katie Schoepfer. Of the 24 players called up, 10 are college seniors eligible for the WPS draft, which will be held during the camp on Jan. 14 at the NSCAA Convention in Baltimore. The U-23s begin a year in which the focus will be on this summer when the Nordic Cup is scheduled to return. The annual tournament for Europe’s top U-23 women’s teams that has long also included the United States has been on hiatus for two years. Seven players on Irwin’s roster helped the USA win the 2008 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Chile.
