Quote Sheet: Post Match against Germany

U.S. head coach TONY DICICCO
On the game…
“It was a very difficult game. I think that if Germany would have scored than it would have probably been a very different game. I think we defended very well tonight and we’ve done that all tournament. I’m proud of my players because they’ve played a lot of games in a short amount of time, which isn’t easy but I’m glad we’ve made it to the final. We’ve gotten better as the tournament has gone on and that is a testament to our players.”

One whether the result was fair…
“One goal was what we needed today and we defended well. But Germany was very strong in the second half.”

On whether his team expected to reach the final…
“Women’s soccer in the United States has a very high standard. We go into every tournament thinking we have a chance to win it. It’s important that we’re in the final, but we have a very difficult opponent to prepare to play there.”

On tonight’s game…
“We’re just so happy that we won. Sometimes it’s hard to score early in the second half because you have to work that much harder to hold the lead. We’ve been scoring in the second half throughout most of the tournament so tonight we had to fight for it.”

On how it feels to be in the lead for the Golden Boot…
“I don’t see it that way. My team has been just amazing and tonight it was Nikki (Washington) who played that ball in tonight. That cross was why the ball ended up in the back of the net. It is pretty cool to think about, but it’s my team that’s put me in the position to finish and I thank them for that.”

“This is the first final for all of us so we’re all very happy and we’re excited for the opportunity to play North Korea.”
