BURTON upon TRENT, England (August 28, 2013) – The U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team won its second consecutive game by a wide margin against England, winning 5-0 as five different players scored. The USA defeated the England 6-0 on Aug. 25.
As in the first match, the USA went ahead early in the game, this time through forward Kelcie Hedge in the 10th minute. Forward Mallory Pugh got the assist as she crossed from the left across the face of the goal and Hedge finished by pushing the ball back into the lower left corner.
Forward Madison Haley made it 2-0 in the 25th minute after receiving a pass from Taylor Otto at the top of the penalty area. She spun toward goal and stuck her right-footed shot into the right side of the net.
Pugh got her third goal in two games on a long, weaving run through four defenders before slotting the ball with her right foot into the lower right corner. The 37th minute goal made it 3-0 and effectively put the game away as the USA would out-shoot England 9-3 for the match. Pugh leads the USA in scoring this year with seven goals in all matches, including five in international games.
In the 54th minute forward Michelle Xiao made it 4-0 when she finished from six yards out after Mia Gyau had made the end line on the right side and rolled a pass back into the seam.
Midfielder Anika Rodriguez put a cap on the scoring in the 69th minute from a Pugh assist, driving her shot into the lower left corner from just inside the penalty area.
The USA, which is preparing for the qualifying tournament for the 2014 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica, will have two more domestic training camps before trying to earn its World Cup berth. The USA will then join seven other countries at the 2013 Women’s Under-17 CONCACAF Championship to be held Oct. 30 through Nov. 9 in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Players born on or after Jan. 1, 1997, are age-eligible for the next U-17 Women’s World Cup.
