Horton Brace Leads Chicago Magic AS Monaco to 4-1 Win Against New York Red Bulls Academy
News Jul 11, 2009
CARSON, Calif. (July 11, 2009) – In a back and forth affair between two determined sides, Chicago Magic AS Monaco prevailed 4-1 against the New York Red Bulls in the opening game for both teams at Development Academy Finals week.
Forward Aaron Horton scored a pair of goals and drew a penalty for Chicago, who now sit in first place in Group 1 of the U-15/16 age group. Tyler Engel and David Caban rounded out the scoring for the Magic, while Victor Manosalvas converted a 25th minute penalty for New York’s only goal of the game.
The teams were evenly matched in the first half as each battled through hard tackles to create dangerous opportunities. The game moved at a high pace as both sides possessed the ball well.
Horton led the attack for his team as the lone striker, consistently holding the ball well against a tough Red Bulls defense. He broke through in the 16th minute, receiving the ball from Oscar Gonzalez and getting in behind the defense. He took a touch around goalkeeper Keith Cardona and slotted the ball in from a wide angle to give his team the lead.
The teams exchanged penalties, as Manosalvas and Engel each converted from the spot. Engel’s goal gave his team an advantage though, forcing Red Bulls to take risks and thus opening up the back line. Horton was able to take advantage of another excellent through ball to once again score a breakaway in the 60th minute. Ten minutes later, teammate Caban rounded out the scoring after receiving the ball on the right side and slipping a low shot past Cardona.
