Chula Vista, Calif. (March 19, 2002) - The WUSA West Coast Preseason Event continued with four matches at the ARCO U.S. Olympic Training Center in San Diego, Calif. The U.S. Under-19 Women's National Team posted the most interesting score of the day, defeating a team of mostly reserve players from the WUSA's San Jose CyberRays, 5-1. In the other matches, the San Diego Spirit defeated a U.S. Under-21 Women's National Team side made up mostly of reserve players, 2-0, while the U.S. U-21 first team players tied the CyberRays first team players, 1-1, in the afternoon match for both teams. The Spirit hammered the U.S. Amateur Team, 6-0, in the final match of the day. For the U-19s against the CyberRays, Kerry Hanks (Allan, Tex./Dallas Texans) opened the scoring in the 28th minute, but Lisa Nanez tied the game eight minutes later for San Jose. Hanks also assisted the go-ahead goal by Lindsay Tarpley (Kalamazoo, Mich./Gazelle TKO), but was knocked out of the game with a separated shoulder early in the second half. Tarpley tallied again in the 52nd minute off an assist from Megan Kakadelas (Carlsbad, Calif/USC) to make it 3-1. Angela Woznuk (El Cajon, Calif./Surf) notched the final two goals, both off Kakadelas passes, giving the San Diego native a true hat trick of assists. Kerry Gragg and Shannon Boxx scored for the Spirit in their blanking of the U-21s in the morning, but the oldest of the USA's youth national teams rebounded to tie the CyberRays in the afternoon as Laura Schott (Wilsonville, Ore./California) scored in the 13th minute. The C-Rays tied the game two minutes later with a goal from captain Tisha Venturini-Hoch and the match ended in a deadlock. In the final match of the day, the Spirit got two goals each from Amy Kofoed and Sherrill Kester, plus individual scores from Gragg and Lori Lindsey, who tallied on her 22nd birthday. Mercy Akide had three assists for the Spirit. Matches resume on Thursday, March 21 as the U-19s take on the Spirit and the U-21s face the U.S. Amateur Team.
