Day One of 2011 Finals Week Wraps in Milwaukee, Wis.

AND WE’RE OFF: Development Academy Finals Week is officially underway after the U-17/18 age group got the first matchday under its belt. Four games were played on Saturday at three venues in Milwaukee, Wis. – Marquette University, Marquette University High School and Uihlein Soccer Park. On Sunday, the U-15/16 teams will begin their quest for the national championship with all eight teams in action. A total of 32 total matches are scheduled for the fourth annual Finals Week, which is being held outside of California for the first time in Academy history.

NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT: The two U-17/18 group winners will be competing for a place in the championship game and to compete on national television as the championship game on Friday, July 15, will be televised live on ESPNU and ESPN3.com at 12 p.m. CT (1 p.m. ET) from Marquette University in Milwaukee.

GROUP 1 STARTS THINGS OFF: Pateadores and New York Red Bulls opened Group 1 of the U-17/18 competition Saturday afternoon. Two late goals helped lift the Southern California club to a shutout win against the Red Bulls and into the top spot in the table, extending their unbeaten run to 10 matches in all competitions. Dallas Texans, 2-1 winners against Players Development Academy, are just behind Pateadores in the standings.

GROUP 2 STANDARD SET: The second pair of games on Saturday featured the four teams that make up Group 2 of the U-17/18 age group. CASL Chelsea FC Academy got off to a dream start against Finals Week newcomers Weston FC, hammering out a 3-0 victory behind a goal and an assist from Monbo Bokar. FC Dallas is also on three points following a 1-0 win against Baltimore Bays Chelsea thanks to an 11th minute goal from Jon Top.

ESPNU, ESPN3.com TO BROADCAST U-17/18 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: The two U-17/18 group winners will be competing for the national championship in front of a live television audience when ESPNU and ESPN3.com broadcast the match Friday, July 15 at 12 p.m. CT (1 p.m. ET) from Marquette University in Milwaukee.

U-15/16S ARE UP: While the older teams began group play on Saturday afternoon, the eight U-15/16 teams have all gotten settled in Milwaukee after arriving Friday evening and throughout the day Saturday. The younger teams traveled from as far as Seattle, Southern California, Pennsylvania and Arizona, and had the opportunity to train once upon arrival in Wisconsin. REFEREE EDUCATION RUNS CONCURRENT: Running concurrently with Finals Week, the FIFA Member Association Course for referees will also be held at Marquette University for U.S. Soccer officials participating in the Development Academy. There will be 30 referees receiving instruction and training in the morning before officiating matches in the afternoon. Two experienced former FIFA referees, Peter Prendergast and Ramesh Ramdhan, will teach the course, providing U.S. Soccer referees working in the Development Academy with expert insight and mentoring.
