U-17 WNT Tops Germany at The Home Depot Center
CARSON, Calif. (February 27, 2005) – The U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team earned a hard-fought win its first international match of the year, downing Germany’s U-17s, 2-0, on a chilly night at the Home Depot Center.
Forward Kelly O’Hara scored the first goal in the 15th minute and centerback Alexondrea Trusty added the second in the 34th as the young Americans roared to a 2-0 halftime lead.
O’Hara’s goal came off a classy finish after she made a hard run into the penalty area to get on the end of Jessica McDonald’s short cross and slid to hit a first-time volley into the lower left corner from 10 yards out.
The second goal came off a set-play as Tobin Heath launched a free kick into the Germany penalty area from the right sideline about 30 yards from the end line. The 5-foot-8 Trusty crashed through a mass of bodies to solidly head home the cross into the left side of the net from six yards out.
U.S. goalkeeper Alssya Naeher came up with a huge save in the 29th minute, stoning Germany’s Julia Simic, who seemingly had an open net as the ball fell to her just 12 yards from the goal. The 5-foot-9 Naeher scrambled across the goal to her right and launched her body to turn away Simic’s blast that would have tied the game.
The USA outshot Germany, 14-11, in the first of two matches between the teams. They will meet again on Wednesday, March 2, at the HDC at 11 a.m. PT. The German U-17s will also play two matches against the U.S. U-16s, the first coming on Monday, Feb. 28, at 5 p.m. PT and the second on Thursday, March 3, at 10 a.m. PT.
