CHICAGO (Oct. 26, 2011) – U.S. Soccer, in conjunction with NIKE and the U.S. Soccer Foundation, has selected 151 participants for the 2011-12 Development Academy Scholarship program. The awards provide need-based aid to full-time players participating in the Development Academy program.
Of 78 clubs in the Academy, 50 have participants in the Scholarship Program’s fourth year. The program helps offset the cost of playing in the Academy, specifically travel expenses, and is an ongoing effort by U.S. Soccer to reduce the expenses for players who demonstrate need for assistance.

“The scholarship program has become an important part of the Development Academy, helping us grow as a soccer nation by ensuring players have access to the opportunities that the Academy provides,†said Tony Lepore, U.S. Soccer Director of Scouting and Technical Advisor in the Northeast. “Thanks to NIKE, the U.S. Soccer Foundation and U.S. Soccer, several players have been able to find success at the Academy level and move on to the next phase of their career.â€
The amount awarded for each player varies due to the cost of travel required by a club’s specific schedule. The scholarship program provides season-long financial aid for players who must commit to completing logs and journals describing such topics as a player’s training, sleep and meal schedules.
