Oscar Gonzalez and Clifford Lyle scored for the Red Bulls, who finished in fourth place in Group 1.
It took only six minutes for the Red Bulls to get on the scoreboard. Oscar Gonzalez received a cross into the box, brought it down with his chest and hit a solid shot past goalkeeper Adam Grinwis to give his team a quick lead. New York was able to control much of the possession in the first half, but the Wolves, who already won Group 1 with two wins in their first two games, began to gain momentum.
New York regrouped and came out of halftime hungry for a second goal. It took just 40 seconds for Clifford Lyle to force a turnover that gave him a clear line at goal. His one-time shot from a bouncing ball sailed straight into the net to double his team’s lead.
The Wolves began to press forward and the second half was played evenly, despite the early goal. Derby’s best chance of the day came in the 75th minute, when a well-played ball snuck through to Erik Anderson, who was into the box unchallenged. He took a touch toward goal and fired a low, driven ball, but it went just wide of the near post.
Derby County will face Group 2 winner Cal Odyssey in the Development Academy U-15/16 championship match on Friday, July 17, at 7 p.m. PT. That game will be shown live on ESPN Classic and ESPN360.com.
