Real Colorado Overcomes Two-Goal Deficit to Earn Draw with PDA at Finals Week

CARSON, Calif. (July 10, 2009) – Real Colorado overcame a two-goal deficit against PDA to earn a hard-fought 2-2 draw in the opening game of U-17/18 Development Academy Finals Week. Dylan Renna and Ryan Finley scored in the first half to give PDA a 2-0 lead, but, seconds before the halftime whistle Real Colorado cut the lead in half as Taylor Kemp converted a penalty kick following a hand ball call. Then, in the 90th minute, Zac Portillos scored the dramatic equalizer with his head to make it a 2-2 final.

PDA controlled a majority of the possession early in the game, but Real Colorado defended as a team and limited dangerous chances early on. PDA was, however, able to break through briefly in the fifth minute, when Ryan Finley sprang through the defense and into the box, but his shot clanged off the outside of the post.

Two minutes later at the other end, Brent Ham sprung Alex Tarnoczi who ran in behind the defense, but William Smith did well to get off his line and out of the box to slide and clear the ball to safety.

Renna opened the scoring in the 37th minute when a he pounced on a bouncing ball at the top of the box. The ball skipped up and he smacked a hard shot that went into the upper left corner of the net. Just six minutes later, another rocket, this time from the foot of Finley, doubled the New Jersey-based squad’s lead. Alex Bramall slotted the ball to the top of the box from the right flank and Finley was able to hit a first-time shot that made it 2-0.

After a hand ball was whistled in the box, Real Colorado’s Kemp cut into the lead in first-half stoppage time, placing the ball perfectly into the top corner of the goal, past a helpless Smith.

Real Colorado turned up its attack to start the second half, looking for the equalizer. In the first five minutes, the Central Conference team had several good chances, with two whistled offside. PDA regained control of the ball once again, but they were unable to add the insurance goal. Real Colorado’s patience paid off when captain Kyle Venter whipped in a perfectly placed ball from the right side that went right to the head of Portillos, who nodded it calmly into the near post to salvage the draw.

PDA will next take on CASL Chelsea FC on Sunday evening while Real Colorado will battle D.C. United, who was a 3-1winner against CASL on Friday afternoon.
