2009 Development Academy Winter Showcase Referee Opportunities

CHICAGO (Sept. 30, 2009 ) -- The U.S. Soccer Development Academy is U.S. Soccer’s new national team training program, consisting of the top U-15/16 and U-17/18 teams from across the country. U.S. Soccer is using the Academy as a platform to develop and identify up-and-coming players, coaches and referees. It is considered the first step in the Pro Identification track for referees and a number of referees were identified in last year’s events for further development.

The Academy season features four national events held around the country. This year’s winter event will be the Academy Winter Showcase, featuring all 154 Academy teams, plus the Nike International Friendlies, featuring the U-17 national teams from the USA, Brazil, Netherlands and Portugal. The event will be held December 4-8, 2009 in Phoenix, Ariz.

The U.S. Soccer Referee Department Staff - Paul Tamberino, Alfred Kleinaitis, Brian Hall, Herb Silva and Dick Triche - will be conducting referee training sessions during the Winter Showcase. The training sessions will review current topics for elite level referees.

A proposed schedule of events and general information is listed below. There will be a referee meeting the evening of Thursday, December 3, consisting of a review match procedures, assignments and a training session by U.S. Soccer Referee Department staff.

Referee Evaluation and Assessment

In an effort to accommodate referees in meeting their assessment requirements, U.S. Soccer will have National Assessors and Referee Inspectors onsite to assess the U17/18 games. Several MLS and Professional referees will also be working games during this event and will be available for mentoring opportunities.

All U-17/18 games will be assessed. Referees may request an assessment in the RSVP section below. In all instances, the game must also meet the “sufficient test or challenge” criteria for the match to be ratable.

Game Fees

Referees will be paid the normal U.S. Soccer Development Academy game fee for games they officiate: $75 for Center Referees, $50 for Assistant Referees and $25 for Fourth Official assignments. All games will utilize a four official crew. All positions will be paid.

Expenses

All expenses are the sole responsibility of the referee, including airfare, hotel, meals and local transportation to/from the airport, hotel and playing venue.

Travel to/from the airport and to/from the hotel and field is not provided by the Development Academy.
