New York Red Bulls Earn First Three Points of 2011 Finals Week with 1-0 Win against Players Development Academy

MILWAUKEE (July 11, 2011) – In a hard-fought match between Liberty Division rivals, New York Red Bulls defeated Players Development Academy by a 1-0 margin with a 72nd minute goal from Paul Ehrenworth at 2011 Development Academy Finals Week.

New York Red Bulls now sit in third place in Group 1 behind Pateadores and Dallas Texans, and face off against the Texans Wed., July 13, in their last group match while Players Development Academy will face current group leader Pateadores. Both matches will kick off at 3 p.m. CT at Uihlein Soccer Park.

The match was a scrappy battle between New Jersey rivals that remained scoreless throughout the first half despite several chances that hit the frame and impressive play from both goalkeepers. In the eighth minute, Red Bulls defender Konrad Plewa took a free kick from 20 yards out on the right side, sending a shot to the near post that PDA goalkeeper Thomas Hand did well to save it by parrying wide.

New York attacked again one minute later, when Christian Johnson sent in a corner kick from the right side that Bolu Akinyode headed toward the goal. Hand punched it out, and a Red Bull forward headed it back on frame but Hand reacted quickly with a kick save.

In the 15th minute, a long ball was sent up to Brandon Allen, who turned as his defender slipped and found himself alone in front of the goalkeeper. He faced the goal and took a few touches unaware that a PDA defender was hot on his trail and who raced over and took advantage of his hesitation to tackle the ball cleanly away.

PDA continued to create chances of their own, and in the 25th minute earned a dangerous free kick from 20 yards. The 2011 Development Academy U-17/18 Player of the Year Christian Hernandez lined up to take the free kick, taking a shot that clanged off the crossbar. The rebound came back out to Hernandez, who blasted a rocket well over the goal.

In the 54th minute, PDA sent a ball out to the left, where second-half sub Noah Sadaoui carried it into the box despite having his jersey grabbed by his defender. The referee allowed the advantage as Sadaoui continued into the box and slipped the ball to teammate Trey Leggett, but Leggett’s powerful shot curved wide of the post.

Red Bull was finally able to break through the deadlock in the 72nd minute after a series of passes saw Richmond McCarthy slip a pass through into the box that Ehrenworth ran onto and hit a one-timer to the far post. Hand dove to his left but couldn’t quite reach the shot as the ball nestled into the back of the net.

PDA kept pushing forward looking for the equalizer, and in the final minute Hernandez sent in a service off a corner kick that his teammate leaped to reach at the far post, but the ball stayed agonizingly high above the leaping attacker.
