CARSON, Calif. (September 23, 2007) — The U.S. Under-14 Girls’ Development Team flooded the net five times in the second half to cap off a commanding 7-1 victory against Mustangs in the final match of the 2007 Women’s Nike Friendlies. Haley Rosen led a host of U.S. goal scorers as the U-14’s recorded their second straight victory to finish the weekend with an impressive 2-0-1 record.
The teams spent the first ten minutes finding their rhythm, but the U.S. would quickly find their scoring touch. In the 18th minute, Kristi Abbatte collected the ball 25 yards from goal and cut left towards the corner of the area. She craftily shot back the other way, sailing a beautiful effort just inside the back post. Sarah Molina doubled the lead seven minutes later, using a quick release from 25 yards to beat Mustangs keeper Shelby Church to the near post.
The Mustangs cut the lead in half just two minutes later with a classic combination play, starting with a through ball to the far right corner. In textbook fashion, Grace Leer took one touch before whipping a precision cross to the back post, where Ashley Edwards slammed a side volley into the back of the net to close out the scoring in the first half.
The U.S. made wholesale changes at halftime, and with the Mustangs only having three players in reserve and the U.S. boasting some serious fire power, the stage was set for an action-packed second half.
The onslaught began in the 48th minute when the Mustangs defense failed to clear a corner kick into safety. The ball landed at the feet of Lo’eau LaBonta, who powered a low rocket on goal that Church could only deflect into the back of the net.
The U-14’s started finding space down the left flank, and their efforts paid off in the 54th minute when Alex Doll beat her defender to the endline, cutting a pass back to the six yard box where Shelby Payne was perfectly poised to increase the lead to three goals.
Rosen got the first of her two goals four minutes later, showing nice composure on a drive through the middle after her dribbling run was nearly foiled by the Mustang defenders. Maintaining possession, she fired home from 12 yards out. In the 80th minute, she found space 25 yards from goal and drove a bullet off the inside of the right post.
Michaela Cowgill closed out the U.S. scoring with four minutes remaining, fighting through a crowd of defenders to get a head on a corner from Katy Lolas.
With the win, the U-14 Girls’ Development Team finished the 2007 Women’s Nike Friendlies with a 2-0-1 record, tallying 13 goals while surrendering six.
