U.S. Men's Daily Notes

CHULA VISTA (Wednesday, January 10, 2001) - The United States Men's National Team will resume twice-daily training sessions on Wednesday after battling the Los Angeles Galaxy to a 1-1 draw in a closed door scrimmage on Tuesday. The 27-player U.S. squad is scheduled to square off against the U.S. Under-20 National Team (who are also in training at ARCO) in the second of two practices on Wednesday, and will meet D.C. United in another scrimmage on Friday afternoon.

Against the Galaxy, who like D.C. United are currently training for the upcoming CONCACAF Champions Cup, the Americans fielded two different teams in Tuesday's training exercise, and dented the scoreboard within thirty seconds of the opening whistle. The USA took the kickoff and marched straight at the L.A. goal, where Landon Donovan spotted a wide-open Clint Mathis, who slammed the ball home to give the U.S. an early 1-0 lead. The Galaxy evened the score at the 15-minute mark when Cobi Jones powered a well-placed header past Tony Meola.

The Galaxy, who have been training together for nearly a month to prepare for the Champions Cup, looked sharp throughout the 90-minute match, but could not find the net again after Jones tied the match at 1-1. The Americans had several scoring chances in the second half, but the forward tandem of Jason Kreis and Roy Lassiter were unable to beat Galaxy goalkeeper Matt Reis.

U.S. head coach Bruce Arena used almost every player in camp at some point in the scrimmage, shifting players in and out of positions throughout the match in an attempt to see as many players in game situations as possible. Of the 27 players currently in training, 25 play professionally in Major League Soccer, and 11 have never before represented the United States National Team.

The Men's Team will train at the Olympic Training Center through next Thursday, January 18. The squad is scheduled to train twice daily through Friday, at 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. each day. The remainder of the training schedule has not yet been finalized. Following the Chula Vista camp, Arena and his coaching staff will select a roster of approximately 22 players to participate in the match against China on January 27, which will be seen live on ESPN2 from the Network Associates Coliseum in Oakland, California.
