U.S. U-17 MNT Round Out Copa Ciudad de Rosario with 3-1 Win Over Chile

ROSARIO, Argentina (July 11, 2008) -- The U.S. Under-17 Men's National Team rounded out the Copa Cuidad de Rosario with a 3-1 win over Chile, finishing the tournament with two wins and one loss. Two first-half goals from Stefan Jerome and one in the second half from Carlos Martinez led the way on offense, while Earl Edwards earned the win in goal with six saves.

In the 11th minute, Luis Gil was on the offensive, carrying the ball up the middle and getting in on a breakaway. He played the ball over to a streaking Jerome, whose initial shot was saved but Chilean goalkeeper Leonardo Rayo's rebound went right back to the forward, who scored on the second chance.

Jerome's speed was on display in scoring his second goal of the match as he ran onto a long ball from Perry Kitchen. Jerome outran Chile's defense, and he beat the goalkeeper to the ball before touching it around him and into the open net.

A build up out of the back led the U.S. to their third goal with combination passing down the wing. The ball started with Edwards, who played the ball to Jack McInerney. McInerney combined with Alex Shinsky to get down the right flank to the end line. McInernsey crossed the ball to Martinez, who ripped his shot off the bottom of the crossbar and in.

As Chile put the U.S. under pressure, Edwards made a save during a scramble in the box. The clearance after his rebound was blocked by Piero Garate, who shot and scored.
