U.S. Under-20 Men Fight to Scoreless Draw With Mexico

The United States Under-20 Men's National Team played to a scoreless draw against Mexico in their final match at the USASA Soccer Festival in Houston, Texas late last night.  The game's kick-off was delayed due to severe thunderstorms in the Houston area.

As they have in all four matches at the Festival, the U.S. produced the better scoring chances and outshot their opponent.  The U.S. finished the Soccer Festival with a 1-1-2 record and now has a 10-5-9 record this year.

The U.S. played the final 26 minutes with a man advantage after Mexican midfielder Ignacio Torres was shown his second caution in the 26th minute. As is expected in matches between the two CONCACAF powers, rough play prevailed.  The referee handed out eight yellow cards and Torres' red card.  Ed Johnson, Ryan Cochrane and Chris Lancos were shown cautions for the U.S.

Only needing to make one save, Steve Cronin recorded his fifth shutout of the year.  The U.S. Under-20s have now recorded 11 shutouts in 24 matches this year, while allowing only 20 goals in 2002.

D.C. United midfielder Bobby Convey played just his second Under-20 match of the year, going the first 45 minutes before being replaced by the Chicago Fire's Miguel Saavedra.  In all, six MLS players played for the U.S. in the tie.

The U.S. outshot Mexico 4-2 in the match and earned six corner kicks to Mexico's two.
