U.S. WNT vs. Scotland: Post-game Quotes

Post-Game Quote Sheet: U.S. Women's National Team vs. Scotland
International Friendly
Jacksonville, Fla.
Feb. 9, 2013

U.S. head coach TOM SERMANNI
On coaching in his first U.S. WNT match:
“It’s good to get the team out on the park. I’m still trying to get to know the players and getting to know how they play and all things they can do. So, the match was a really valuable experience to get started. “

On what impressed him about the match:
“What impressed me was the number of chances that the players got and how they can create chances all at times. At times, some of the combinations impressed me. So, just the way they focus and go about doing the job and winning games is very impressive.”

On Christen Press, who scored two goals in her first cap:

“Yeah, that was great; a good selection by the coach (laughing). She’s had a great week in training. At times, when I look at selecting the team, I’m looking how players are doing in training. Bear in mind that this is the start of the year so some players are a bit more played in than others. She’s been outstanding all week in training and she brought that training performance into the game tonight. She scored two terrific goals. Two great goals.”

On if he sees Press continuing to play outside midfield where she started tonight or if she could see time at forward:
“It’s hard to say. When you look at a team, you’ve got many talented players in both outside midfield and forward. It’s a question having lots of depth in those striking areas with those forward players. The more tools she can bring, the more opportunities she might get. I think she did well playing in that wide right midfield position. I think probably she might still be a better out and out striker.”

On if these games are going to help the players for the NWSL:
“I think any games help. They help the preparation. They help you get match fit and they help get you ready for the league. So those games will help the players in that regard and it’s just important getting the players back and playing some games. “

On defender Ali Krieger making her return to the National Team lineup:
“It’s great. The way she played tonight is the way she is in training. She’s solid. She’s uncompromising. She’s one of those players you wouldn’t want to be playing against week in and week out. So it’s great to see that energy and enthusiasm coming back in this squad.”

U.S. midfielder CHRISTEN PRESS
On her first goal:
“It was a clearance from the defense, but it was short, so it was my job to clean up anything that came out. At that point, it’s have fun, take a shot and see what happens.”

On how playing last season in Sweden helped her game:
“I think going to Sweden to play aboard was such a blessing in my life. Seeing different styles of soccer and all the things that I’ve been able to learn as a person and a player has prepared me to play at this level.”

On scoring in her first cap:
“I was hoping that my first cap would be my first start and my first goal all in the same day. I was sort of going for the trifecta and my teammates made it easy so I am thankful to them.”

On playing right midfield instead of her usual position at forward:
“We have a new coach and we are not 100 percent (in positions). It’s a new year, a new team and now a new position so I was doing my best to bring my strengths to the game even though I was in a little bit of a lower and wider position. Playing in the midfield is an opportunity for me to be on the field. We have so many great attacking players, but every chance out there is a chance for me to grow and learn about the game.”

U.S. midfielder YAEL AVERBUCH
On what playing in Sweden did for her game:
“For me going overseas was a lot about regaining my confidence. I was in a new atmosphere and playing in Sweden I learned a lot about myself and the game and I got to play a lot of 90 minutes games in different situations. It’s really helped me personally that there’s a big soccer world out there with a lot of different styles and I should take a little bit from all of that.”

On the defense against Scotland:
“The defense did well. We haven’t been training too much together, but it’s great to have Krieger back playing with confidence. We’ve only had five days of training but we have a lot of great personalities.”

On the return of Ali Krieger to the lineup:
“She’s makes a big impact. She did really well in the World Cup and she has a great presence out there. Playing in Germany, against some of the best players in the world, she’s played at a high level and high pace and she looks really comfortable. It’s great to have her back.”

U.S. defender ALI KRIEGER
On returning to the WNT starting lineup:
“I’m so excited. I’m thrilled to be back on the field with these players. It’s such a good feeling. This is the highest level you can play at. This is probably the toughest year of my life due to the injury and to be able to start 2013 with a game like this is a great feeling.”

On returning to the USA to play in the NWSL:
“I’m starting on the right foot. It was a good time for me to come home. The doors are wide open and I jumped through and I hope things will get better each day. I am fully fit and I want to help this league and be a part of it from day one. I’m home and ready to start and hopefully will inspire people.”

On reaching her goal of putting on the national team jersey again:
“I wasn’t going to stop until I put this jersey back on for this country, for this team and for myself and my family. It’s a goal of mine to compete at the highest level and these players motivated me every single day to get back. I’m looking up and hearing the cheers after the goal and it just feels so good. Abby (Wambach) talked to me before the game and said it was going to be a great night and just to take a deep breath and enjoy it. I did that and put on the jersey and thought, ‘Oh wow, I made it back. This is awesome.”

On the performance of Christen Press:
“She’s a tremendous player, one of the new faces on this team and that’s what we need. We need that new energy. We always have fire under us and always have to set the standard and she’s doing that. She made a statement tonight and great for her. She’s a great person and I’m happy she got the two goals.”

U.S. midfielder CARLI LLOYD
On the match:
“It was good. It’s always hard to get into rhythm when we haven’t played a 90-minute game together in a month-and-a-half. Some people earned their first caps and Press got two goals in her first game and it was a great start to the year. This is what it’s all about: it’s the road to 2015. We are looking forward to the future and continuing to grow as a team.”

On the performance of Christen Press:
“She came in the later stages with Pia and didn’t have enough time to get her feet in there, but every time she came in she was dangerous. She had a great week of training, was scoring some goals, and I’m really happy for her. There’s more to come.”
