Real Salt Lake AZ Claims Third in Dramatic Penalty Kick Finish

MILWAUKEE (July 16, 2011) – Real Salt Lake AZ claimed third place in the U-15/16 age group of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy 2011 Finals Week in a dramatic 8-7 penalty kick finish against Real So Cal. Man of the Match Isaias Juarez netted the clinching penalty after Real So Cal’s Cory Miller sent his shot over the crossbar in the eighth round of kicks.

Real Salt Lake came out of the gate pressuring Real So Cal and looking to score an early goal. In the eighth minute, Real Salt Lake earned a free kick from about 20 yards out after Forrest Solis used his hand to bring down the ball. Joshua Goss had too much flight on his kick and no one could get a head on it.

After another Real So Cal foul, Goss took control of the free kick close to the right touchline. This time, his kick sent a perfectly timed ball into the box, but Dylan Kelly’s bicycle kick attempt proved uneventful.

Real So Cal fought back with chances of their own. In the 18th minute, Steve Manios sent a long cross in front of the goal that Quentin Anson attempted to deflect the ball while sliding towards goal, but his foot took the ball over the crossbar.

Just before the half, it was Manios again who battled a defender inside the penalty box and turned on him to have a free lane to kick the ball, which went right of the goal, sending the Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Joey Speshock diving in anticipation.

Real Salt Lake dominated the second half, keeping the play mostly in Real So Cal’s half. In the 53rd minute, Jose Navarro took a hard shot at goal that was saved by a defender. Danny Gavin collected the rebound and one-touched the ball just wide of the empty net.

In the 68th minute, Real So Cal’s Brandon Vincent took their only corner kick of the game, sending the ball into the box where Daniel Dannas tried to get a head on it but sent it misdirected.

In the last minute of regulation, Real Salt Lake tried to close out the game on a corner kick, but it flew past the goal and out of bounds, sending the game straight into penalty kicks.

After seven rounds of penalty kicks saw all 14 takes find success , Real So Cal’s Miller stepped up to the spot to begin the eighth round. With too much power behind his foot, Miller sent the ball over the crossbar, giving Real Salt Lake the opportunity to win the game with a goal.

Juarez took the eighth kick for Real Salt Lake and netted the game-winner when he fooled Real So Cal’s goalkeeper Jason Trejos and sent the ball in the opposite direction of his dive. With the goal, Real Salt Lake claimed third place in the U-15/16 age group at 2011 Finals Week, an impressive feat for the first-year club.
