U.S. U-18 WNT Roars Back From Three Goals Down to Tie Sweden U-19s 3-3 in La Manga, Spain

CHICAGO (March 8, 2014) -- The U.S. Under-18 Women’s National Team mounted an epic comeback after falling behind 3-0 after 63 minutes, scoring three times in just over a half-hour, including an 86th minute equalizer from Imani Dorsey, to tie the Sweden U-19 WNT 3-3 in its first match of the 10 Nations Tournament in La Manga, Spain.

The friendly competition features three matches for each of the teams and the U.S. is playing against players that are one year older.

Sweden took the lead in the 15th minute off a nice finish from the left side of the penalty box into the lower right corner from Stina Blackstenius and it stayed 1-0 until the 55th minute when Blackstenius doubled the lead.

She ran onto the ball in the penalty area and beat the first defender with a nice cut back. U.S. goalkeeper Rose Chandler came out to smother at her feet, but the ball squirmed loose and Blackstenius latched onto the free ball to push it into the empty net from six yards out.

Sweden seemingly had put the game out of reach in the 63rd minute after Lina Hurtig took advantage of a free ball that had been tackled away from one of her teammates, dribbled into the right side of the box and slotted into the left corner.

Two minutes later the younger U.S. side began its comeback.

In the 65th minute, Amber Munerlyn crossed from the right side on the ground into the penalty area and Darian Jenkins ran over the ball leaving it for the crashing Rebecca Rasmussen, who first-timed it into the net from six yards out.

The USA pulled to within one goal in the 76th minute on a mistake in the back by Sweden as Kayla Cappuzzo picked off a back pass and finished to make it 3-2.

The USA equalized with four minutes left, as Cappuzzo crossed the ball from the right and Dorsey headed home at the far post from the top of the six-yard box.

Up next for the USA is a match against the Norway U-19s on March 10 followed by a game on March 12 against the France U-19s.
