Development Academy Finals Week Update - Day Three

KEY MATCHUPS SLATED FOR SECOND DAY OF GAMES FOR U-17/18: The Under-17/18 teams are set for key second games at the 2008-09 Development Academy Finals Week at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. Group 1 leader Carmel United (Carmel, Ind.) will be looking for its second win of the week against the Dallas Texans at 3 p.m. PT, while IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) and FC Greater Boston look to gain ground in the 4 p.m. game. In Group 2 action, D.C. United looks to build on a Friday win and keep a firm grip on first place when it faces Real Colorado (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) at 6 p.m. In the last game of the evening, PDA (Zarephath, N.J.) squares off with CASL Chelsea FC (Raleigh, N.C.) as both teams will be looking to stay in the running for the group title and a chance to be crowned Development Academy champions.

MAGIC AND WOLVES TAKE LEAD IN UNDER-15/16 GROUP 1: Chicago Magic AS Monaco and Derby County Wolves both picked up wins in their respective opening games in the Under-15/16 age group on Saturday to take the early lead in Group 1. Aaron Horton lifted the Chicago Magic to a 4-1 victory against the New York Red Bulls with two goals, while Derby County nearly matched the Magic’s output with a brace from Reed Losee that paved the way to a 3-1 win against FC Dallas under the lights on Mooch Myernick Field. The two winners will next square off against each other in a key battle on Monday afternoon, while FC Dallas and New York Red Bulls will be fighting to stay in contention.

ALL WITHIN A GOAL: Both games in the U-15/16 Group 2 ended 1-0, with PDA and Cal Odyssey taking the tops spots in the group. A first half goal from Brandon Allen was all PDA needed, as the New Jersey-based squad held on to shutout Washington Premier FC in the opening match of U-15/16 Finals Week. Cal Odyssey’s standout forward Gregory Antagnoli netted a 64th-minute game-winner to lift his team against Greensboro and keep pace with PDA. The top two teams will go head-to-head on Monday evening at 7 p.m. while Washington Premier FC and Greensboro Youth Soccer will be looking to make up ground in the 6 p.m. game on Monday.

WATCH OPENING U-15/16 GAMES ON USSOCCER.COM: Catch all the action from the opening day of games from the U-15/16 age group today on as all four games will be replayed on Starting at 2 p.m. PT, each match will be played back-to-back giving fans the opportunity to watch some of the best youth players in the nation. The one-day delayed broadcasts will be available for every game played during Finals Week, with the exception of the two championship matches on July 16 and July 17, which will be shown live on ESPN Classic.

CHAMPIONS TO BE CROWNED LIVE ON ESPN CLASSIC: For the second consecutive year, the U.S. Soccer’s Development Academy season will finish on a high note during Finals Week with the championship match in both age groups being broadcast live on ESPN Classic. Both matches will be played at U.S. Soccer’s National Training Center at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., with the U-17/18 championship taking place on Thursday, July 16 at 7 p.m. PT and the U-15/16 championship a day later on Friday, July 17 at 7 p.m. PT.

Quick Hits:
• D.C. United’s Andy Najar leads all players with three goals at Finals Week after netting a hat trick on Friday afternoon. Only two other players, Aaron Horton (Chicago Magic AS Monaco) and Reed Losee (Derby County Wolves) have more than one.
• The 22 goals scored during the first eight games have come from 18 different goal scorers.
• IMG Academy and FC Greater Boston U-17/18 teams, who will meet on Sunday faced off during the regularcseason, with FC Greater Boston taking a 3-0 win on May 24 during the Spring Showcase.
• PDA is the only team represented by a team in both age groups.
• CASL Chelsea FC is the only U-17/18 team to return from the inaugural Finals Week in the 2007-08 season.
• Carmel United took home the U-15/16 title in the 2007-08 season. This year, the team has returned to The HDC as a U-17/18 team. PDA was the runner up in that U-15/16 championship game.
• U-17/18 Carmel United, U-15/16 PDA and U-15/16 Cal Odyssey are the only teams to earn shutouts through the first two days.

CONFERENCE AWARDS UNVEILED: The 2008-09 Development Academy Conference Starting XI and Coaches of the Year for both the U-15/16 and U-17/18 age groups have been unveiled just before the start of Finals Week. Development Academy Starting XI and Academy Players and Coaches of the Year will be announced next week. All awards were voted upon by Development Academy clubs and national staff coaches.
