O'Brien Makes History

CHICAGO (Tuesday, April 8, 2003) - With an appearance in Tuesday's match between AFC Ajax and AC Milan, U.S. international John O'Brien become the first American player in history to play in the quarterfinal round of the prestigious UEFA Champions League.  The match ended 0-0 at the Amsterdam ArenA.  The two teams play again in Milan on April 23.  O'Brien, 25, made his debut in the Champions League earlier this season, making three appearances.

Jovan Kirovski was the first American to compete in the tournament as a member of the 1997 championship-winning side Borussia Dortmund, and the first to score a goal in Dortmund's 3-0 win vs Sparta Prague on Dec. 10, 1997.

Fellow U.S. internationals Claudio Reyna, Frankie Hejduk and Tony Sanneh have also played in Europe's most important club tournament.
