U.S. in Position to Qualify for Second Stage of FIFA Futsal World Championship

U.S. Futsal National Team
Game Notes – U.S. vs. Japan
Taipei City, Taiwan
Nov. 24, 2004

U.S. FACES JAPAN WITH SECOND ROUND IN SIGHT: The U.S. will conclude group play of the FIFA Futsal World Championship 2004 on Thursday, Nov. 25 at 8 p.m. local time as the team changes venues to the National Taipei University to face Japan. The U.S. could still advance with a loss, but the most scenarios that have the U.S. advancing include winning or tying with help from Italy. At the same time as the U.S. match, Italy and Paraguay will play the other final match from Group C in Linkou Gymnasium. Thursday’s USA match will be available live via ussoccer.com’s MatchTracker, presented by Philips Electronics. The game will be broadcast on tape delay at midnight ET, 11 p.m. CT and midnight PT on Galavision. The U.S. is now tied for second in Group C with three points along with Paraguay. Italy is in the top position with six points and a +8 goal differential. The U.S. leads Paraguay for the second spot by virtue of their head to head victory, the fourth tiebreaker. Below are the scenarios for the U.S. to advance to the next stage:

U.S. CLINCHING SCENARIOS:
 U.S. wins, and Paraguay doesn't win.
 U.S. ties, and Italy wins.
 U.S. ties, and Italy-Paraguay ties: U.S. would advance if there are more goals in our game.
 U.S. wins, and Paraguay wins: U.S. would advance if the team wins by more goals than Paraguay (and if the differential is the same, the U.S. must score more goals than Paraguay).
 U.S. loses, and Paraguay loses: U.S. would advance if the team can finish with a better goal-differential than both Paraguay and Japan.

U.S. ELIMINATION SCENARIOS:
 U.S. ties, and Paraguay wins.
 U.S. loses, and Paraguay wins or ties.
 U.S. loses, and Paraguay loses: U.S. eliminated if they do not end up with a better goal-differential than both Paraguay and Japan.
 U.S. wins, and Paraguay wins: U.S. eliminated if Paraguay wins by more goals than the U.S.  (and if the differential is the same, the U.S. is eliminated if Paraguay scores as many or more goals).

JAPAN DROPS FIRST TWO GAMES: Japan opened the World Championship with a 5-4 loss to Paraguay, and then followed that up with a 5-0 defeat to Japan. Currently without any points, Japan needs a win by Italy and a win over the U.S. to still stay alive. If both were to happen, Japan would need to improve their –6 goal differential to better than the –1 of the U.S. and Paraguay. Top striker Kenichiro Kogure found the scoring sheet twice vs. Paraguay, while Rikarudo Higa and Yoshifumi Maeda each scored once. Hisamitsu Kawahara has been in goal for Japan in both games.

A LOOK AT JAPAN: This will be the first meeting between the U.S. and Japan. Against other teams from Asia, the U.S. has a record of 5-0 with a 31-5 goal difference, including a 4-2 victory over Iran at the 1992 World Championship. Japan finished as runners up at the AFC Futsal Championship, rolling into the final with a 6-0-0 record including 46 goals for and just five against. Their only loss, however, came in the final to regional power Iran by a 5-3 margin that was not as close as the scoreboard indicated. Kogure was the team's top scorer with eight goals, and experienced Brazilian coach Sérgio Aguiar Guimarães Filho (Sapo) leads the team. Japan is one of a few teams in the tournament we less international experience than the U.S., as their leading cap winner is Kogure with 17 caps (and a team best 14 goals)

Japan Roster
Goalkeepers (3): 1-Hisamitsu Kawahara (Tahara), 12-Hisao Sadanaga (Fire Fox), 14-Ryota Ishiwata (Sharks)
Defenders (3): 2-Takuya Suzumura (Mag's Futsal Club), 5-Rikarudo Higa (FC Ryukyu), 6-Osamu Nambata (Fire Fox)
Midfielders (4): 3-Yoshifumi Maeda (Cascavel Tokyo), 4-Yusuke Komiyama (Fire Fox), 8-Kenta Fugii (Mag's Futsal Club), 13-Kensuke Takahashi (Predator)
Forwards (4): 7-Yuki Kanayama (Cascavel Tokyo), 9-Daisuke Ono (Futuro Futsal), 10-Kenichiro Kogure (Fire Fox), 11-Kiyoshi Sagane (Predator)

CHANGE OF VENUE: So that the U.S. vs. Japan and Paraguay vs. Italy matches could be staged at the same time so that neither team would be able to know what result they needed to advance, the U.S. will play in a new venue for their final group match. The U.S. had their final training before the match at the National Taipei University New Gymnasium, a sparkling facility located in the heart of Taipei City’s estimated 2.7 million residents. Much smaller than Linkou Gymnasium where the first two matches were played, the New Gymnasium has a capacity of just over 5,000 fans and will provide a more intimate setting for the match. Visit ussoccer.com to see photos of the U.S. training at the new venue as well as photos from the Paraguay match. Link: /articles/viewArticle.jsp_1278585.html

TOURNAMENT UPDATE: Each team is now down to their final game, and only two teams – Thailand and Australia from Group B – are out of the running. Chinese Taipei and Cuba, while still technically alive, would have to overcome insurmountable goal differentials to advance. If the tournament ended today, the United States would be placed in Group E with Egypt, Brazil and Argentina. Egypt is holding onto second place in Group A, but the Ukraine should overtake them for second place with an almost expected blowout win over the hosts on the final match day.
