Hammerheads Pull Off the Upset, Top Burn 4-1; Five MLS Teams Advance Wednesday


The Burn opened the scoring in the 11th minute with Joselito Vaca getting the assist on an Eddie Johnson goal. Later in the 33rd minute, Wilmington evened the score as Jeff Johnson found the back of the net on an assist from George Corrie. The game winner came seven minutes into the second half as Byron Carmichael picked up the assist on a Kevin Nylen goal. Glenn Murray added a pair of insurance goals in the 69th and 85th minutes as the Hammerheads cruised to victory.

The Hammerheads will host D.C. United (MLS) in the quarterfinals on Aug. 27 in Wilmington. D.C. needed overtime to overtake the Virginia Beach Mariners (A-League) at the Maryland Soccerplex in Boyds, Md. Player/Coach Hristo Stoichkov notched the game-winner in the 97th minute on an assist from Bryan Namoff.

In the highest scoring match of the 2003 Open Cup to this point, the MetroStars (MLS) came back from a 2-0 deficit after the 12th minute and a 3-1 halftime disadvantage to top the Columbus Crew (MLS), 4-3. Eddie Pope scored the equalizer in the 77th minute and the winner in the 86th minute as the Crew played a man down for the final 21 minutes (plus five minutes of stoppage time) after Brian West was sent off. Edson Buddle scored in the 11th and 12th minutes, and Jeff Cunningham assisted on all three Columbus tallies.

The MetroStars will now host the New England Revolution (MLS) at Rutgers’ Yurcak Field in New Jersey on Aug. 27. New England got the game-winner vs. the Rochester Raging Rhinos (A-League) in first-half stoppage time to win 2-1. Taylor Twellman and Steve Ralston both scored for the Revs.

After a 45-minute weather delay due to lightning, the Chicago Fire (MLS) topped Milwaukee Wave United (A-League) in Milwaukee. Nate Jaqua had a pair of assists for Chicago as Chris Armas, Ante Razov, Evan Whitfield and Dipsy Selolwane all found the back of the net for the Fire. Chicago will host the Colorado Rapids in the quarterfinals at Naperville’s Cardinal Stadium on Aug. 27.

The cinderella Fresno Fuego, a USASA affiliated team that qualify out of the PDL, finally had their run ended by the Los Angeles Galaxy (MLS), falling 3-1. The only team to play in each of the first four rounds, the Fuego got on the board with an Eddie Gutierrez goal in the 23rd minute. The Galaxy scored two minutes later and added the game-winner in the 33rd minute as Alejandro Moreno found the back of the net. The Galaxy will travel to Seattle for the quarterfinals, facing the Seattle Sounders at Seattle Seahawks Stadium on Aug. 27.

In Tuesday night’s action, the Seattle Sounders (A-League) improved to 3-2-1 overall vs. the San Jose Earthquakes (MLS) with a 1-0 win at the University of Washington. In the other match, the Colorado Rapids (MLS) got a pair of goals from John Spencer including the game-winner as his team advanced past the Kansas City Wizards (MLS), 3-2.
