U-17 Split Squad Splits Results on June 3


CARSON, Calif. (June 3, 2004) The U.S. Under-17 1988 Men's National Team split into two squads to play a pair of games Thursday night at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. The first team fell to the Irvine Strikers U-17 3-2 on an 87th minute penalty kick, while the second team topped the Santa Anita Stampede by a 3-1 mark.

Against Irving, the U.S. fell behind 2-0 by the 16th minute but would answer back before the end of the first half. Forward Quavas Kirk found the back of the net in the 18th minute with midfielder Nik Besagno picking up the assist. The second U.S. goal came from midfielder Richard Edgar in the 35th mintue with midfielder Kyle Nakazawa assisting.

After nearly concluding the match with each team scoreless, a foul in the area resulted in an 87th minute penalty kick for Irving which was converted past U.S. goalkeeper Bryant Rueckner.

In the second game, the U.S. goals came from Gabriel Farfan, Danny Ortega and David Arvizu with only a second half goal keeping U.S. goalkeeper Evan Newton from holding onto his clean sheet.

The overall record for the U.S. was 2-3 on the trip, which included a split with the U-19 Irving Strikers on May 29 and June 1. The U.S. also fell to the Orange County BlueStars of the PDL by a 1-0 mark on Wednesday.
