U.S. Under-17 '90/91 Men's National Team Tops Richmond Kickers in Final Fall Showcase Game

CARSON, Calif. (Oct. 8, 2007) – The U.S. Under-17 ‘90/91 Men’s National Team topped the Richmond Kickers, 1-0, in the last game of the Development Academy Fall Showcase.

Scott Caldwell scored the lone goal of the game in the 32nd minute, finishing a shot by Ben Speas that was deflected by a defender. With the goalkeeper reacting to the initial shot, Caldwell had an empty net and fired it in.

The win was the second of the weekend of the Under-17 ‘90/91s, and combined with the Under-17 ‘92s, the U.S. Youth National Teams took home four shutout wins over the weekend with four different goalkeepers in net.

Richmond almost got on the board in the first half when Patrick Innes found himself in alone on goalkeeper Samir Badr, but Badr came out and was able to deflect the ball over the endline.

Ben Speas almost doubled the U.S. lead just a few minutes later, curling a 25-yard free kick just high of the far corner of the goal. Speas was dangerous all morning, pressuring the Richmond defense and creating an opportunity late in the first half. Speas won the ball from his defender and wound up to take a shot, but Richmond’s Jonathon Mosley did well to recover and block the shot away.

Second-half substitute Bryan Dominguez had the best chance for the U.S. in the second half, receiving a ball from Amobi Okugu on the right side and firing a hard shot that forced the Richmond goalkeeper to dive off his line.
