2009 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Possible Final Sites Released

CHICAGO (July 16, 2009) — RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C., Robertson Stadium in Houston, Texas, and Qwest Field in Seattle, Wash., have been named as the possible venues of the 2009 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup championship match. Pending the results of the semifinal matches on Tuesday, July 21, the championship will take place Tuesday, Sept. 1, or Wednesday, Sept. 2.

If defending champion D.C. United wins their semifinal matchup with the Rochester Rhinos, then D.C. will host the final for the second consecutive year. Should the Rhinos advance to the final, they will travel to face the winner of the Houston Dynamo against Seattle Sounders semifinal.

The Rochester Rhinos (USL-1) are looking to advance to the final for the third time since MLS began participating in the tournament in 1996, having lost to D.C. United in the 1996 final before beating the Colorado Rapids in 1999 in a championship that still marks the only time a USL team has won the tournament since MLS was created. To reach the final, they’ll have to defeat defending champion D.C. United at Maryland Soccerplex in Boyds, Md., on July 21, at 7:30 p.m. ET.

The Rhinos enter the semifinals as the only non-MLS team remaining in the tournament, having earned that distinction by dispatching the Wilmington Hammerheads (USL-2) in Rochester, N.Y., on July 7.

The other semifinal matchup sees a meeting of two strong MLS sides, as the Houston Dynamo travel to the Pacific Northwest to face the Seattle Sounders in Tukwila, Wash. Currently first and second in the Western Conference, respectively, the two MLS clubs will face off July 21, at 7 p.m. PT for the chance to win their first U.S. Open Cup title.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the U.S. Soccer Federation’s national championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. It is the oldest national annual tournament for team sports in U.S. history and among the oldest soccer tournaments of its type in the world.
