U.S. U-23 WNT Defeats England 3-0 in La Manga

LA MANGA, Spain (Feb. 6, 2009) -- The U.S. U-23 Women's National Team swept both its matches in La Manga, Spain, defeating the England U-23s by a 3-0 score on Feb. 6 after downing the Norwegian U-23s, 1-0, on Feb. 4.

The USA took the lead just five minutes into the game as midfielder Brittany Klein took a pass from Christen Press and hit her shot into the lower right corner from 18 years out. Forward Amanda Cinalli doubled the lead with five minutes left in the half off a corner kick from Yael Averbuch that bounced around in the box before the St. Louis Athletic draft pick hammered it home.

The clinching goal came just two minutes from time, also off an Averbuch corner kick. This time the ball flew to the head of defender Kasey Moore, who headed it back into the goal mouth for Lorraine Quinn, the shortest player on the roster at 5-2, to head into the net.

These were the first two international matches of the year for the U-23s, who will reconvene for a training camp in Portland, Ore., April.
