CHICAGO (Thursday, August 23, 2001) - The kickoff time for the Nike U.S. Women's Cup match between the USA and Japan on Tuesday, Sept. 11, at Columbus Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio, has been moved up an hour and smack into primetime on ESPN. The match was moved from ESPN2 and will be shown live on ESPN at 8 p.m. ET. The first game of the doubleheader featuring China vs. Germany was also moved up an hour and will begin at 5:30 p.m. ET.
The shift of the USA-Japan match means that all three U.S. games from the 2001 Nike U.S. Women's Cup will be seen live on ESPN. U.S. head coach April Heinrichs will bring 24 players to a four-day training camp in Chicago on Sept. 4 before picking her 18-woman squad that will represent the USA in the four-team, six-game tournament.
The 2001 Nike U.S. Women's Cup marks the first tournament competition for the United States since the kickoff of the WUSA. The tournament will be an early test for U.S. head coach April Heinrichs as she begins to formulate plans for next year's CONCACAF qualifying round for the 2003 Women's World Cup to be held in China.
Germany and Japan open the tournament on Friday, Sept. 7, at Schwaben Field in Buffalo Grove, Ill., a northwest suburb of Chicago, with the kickoff at 5:30 p.m. CT. The first of three doubleheaders involving the U.S. women will take place on Sunday, Sept. 9, at Soldier Field as the USA faces Germany (Noon CT) followed by China and Japan (2:30 p.m. CT). The tournament will then move to Columbus Crew Stadium, site of matches at the Nike U.S. Women's Cup '99.
The tournament concludes on Sunday, September 16, with a unique doubleheader as the USA faces China at Noon CT. That match will be followed by an MLS contest featuring the defending champion Kansas City Wizards vs. the Colorado Rapids in K.C.'s regular season finale. The USA-China match marks the first time the two teams have met on American soil since the historic 1999 Women's World Cup Final, won by the USA in dramatic fashion on penalty kicks.
